lxxxiv. yellow buses and going back to school

Aaron and I were waiting at the bus stop together. The summer felt so short, but it was sort of nice to be back in school again.

"I wonder when the bus is going to come," Aaron stated.

"I know," I said. "It always takes forever."

"I heard that we get to wake up later next year," Aaron said.

"Me too," I replied. "That sounds really nice."

I looked around. The sun was barely rising over the horizon and nobody else was outside except us. In fact, it seemed like the entire world was asleep. Even the birds had decided to quiet down.

The bus interrupted the strange silence and roared towards our stop. Aaron and I sat next to each other on the bus, just like we had since kindergarten. So much had changed since then though.

"I can't believe we're going to high school next year," Aaron said.

"Me neither," I replied. "Do you even know what you want to do with the rest of your life?"

"No idea," Aaron said. "I'll just be a hobo."

"You'll figure it out," I said, remembering how my mom used to harass me about this all the time. Even when I was a little kid, I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Mom always thought it meant that there was something wrong with me. She also thought that there was something wrong with the fact that I only had two real friends. I never saw the problem. They were two of the best friends that I could ask for.

Aaron and I still sat up front, even though the kids our age usually sat in the back. The other kids were so obnoxious though. It was better to be alone together in our little island in the front.

Aaron pulled out his phone and I pulled out my book. I had barely even read a page when Aaron started laughing hysterically.

"What is it?" I asked.

"This YouTube video...you have to watch it!" he shouted. He passed me an earbud and I watched the video. It seemed stupid to me, but Aaron seemed to like it. Finally, the bus pulled up at the school.

“Bye McKenna,” Aaron said. He smiled and headed off to class. I headed in the opposite direction. Finally, it was school again, and for once, I could say that I was kind of excited.
