cxix. senior year and becoming the cool kids
It was finally the first day of school. Aaron had offered to do a carpool, so none of us had to ride the bus. Aaron was ridiculously late though, just like the bus. I had spent the last ten minutes waiting for him.
Our house had become rather busy in the mornings. Shonali was busy helping Brooklyn get ready for school. Brooklyn had to wake up earlier than any of the rest of us because simple tasks were now difficult for her. At that moment, Shonali was trying to help Brooklyn get into the car.
Noah forgot to set his alarm, so he was rushing like crazy. I glanced into the kitchen, where Noah was practically inhaling his breakfast. Dad was just about ready for work, so he was helping Shonali and Brooklyn. I was still stuck waiting for Aaron. If he took much longer, I might just take the bus.
Aaron showed up a few minutes later. “Bye everyone!” I shouted as I ran out the door. I hopped into the back of the minivan next to Justin.
“Hey McKenna,” Aaron said as he backed out of my driveway. “What’s up?”
“Not much,” I said. I sighed. “I wish we didn’t have to go back to school.”
“But it’s our last year!” Justin said. “Then we get to go to college!”
Aaron shrugged. “More school doesn’t appeal to me, but I’ll probably end up going anyways.”
“I guess we’ll just do the best we can to survive this year,” I said.
“Exactly,” Aaron said. He turned on the radio, but Justin immediately asked him to change it. Aaron kept flipping stations, but he couldn’t find anything that Justin liked, so he just plugged in Justin’s phone. An old song that we all knew but I still didn’t know the title of started playing. Aaron, Justin, and I knew all of the words, so we all sang along. Unfortunately, none of us were good singers. Justin was okay, but not great, and Aaron and I were just awful. We had fun though.
“Are any of you guys taking AP Music Theory?” Justin asked once the song was over.
“Nope,” I said. “Aaron, are you taking French this year?”
“Yep!” Aaron shouted.
“How about Journalism? AP Biology?” Justin asked.
“Justin, you’re the only one who takes those classes,” I said.
“I’m taking AP Bio,” Aaron said.
“Biology buddies!” Justin shouted, and Aaron and Justin high-fived.
“Anyone else taking Law?” I asked. Aaron and Justin both shook their heads. I knew I would be the only one in that class. It was okay. I liked smaller classes anyway.
Aaron pulled up in front of the school. “Well, here we are,” he said. “We’re finally seniors!”
“Finally,” Justin said.
I threw on my backpack and headed into the school. We were seniors at last.
