xxvi. aaron's house and card games
"Why can't we go to your house?" Aaron asked me. He lived close enough to the school that we could walk there. Aaron's mommy had to walk with us though.
"Because you invited me and my mommy says it's rude to invite yourself over," I said.
"But you have a Wii and a treehouse! You're so lucky!"
"I guess so," I said.
"My house is no fun to play at," Aaron said.
"Maybe it is," I said. "I've never played at your house."
"It really isn't," Aaron said. Aaron's mommy unlocked the door. Aaron immediately ran into the kitchen.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"I'm looking for food," Aaron said. "I want the gummy worms though!"
Another woman entered the room and sat down next to Aaron's mommy. "I'll get it for you sweetie," she said. She reached up to the top shelf and gave Aaron a bag of gummy worms.
"Thank you Mommy!" Aaron shouted. He opened the bag. "Do you want one?"
I nodded and took a gummy worm out of the bag. "Thank you," I said.
"You're welcome," Aaron said. We sat down on the couch in the living room and Aaron put a big handful of gummy worms in his mouth. "Do you want to play a game?"
"Sure," I said.
"How about Telephone?"
"That doesn't work with two people."
"Uno?"
"Yeah, sure." Aaron took out the cards. He shuffled them. He was really good at shuffling. I couldn't do that. Then he dealt out the cards.
"Aaron?" I said.
"What?" he said.
"Isn't it kind of weird that you have two mommies?"
"No," Aaron said. "Why does everyone think it's weird?"
"I just thought everyone had a mommy and a daddy."
"Well, I think it's normal to have two mommies."
I shrugged. Now that I thought about it, I guess there wasn't anything really wrong with it. I reached to take a gummy worm, but Aaron had eaten all of them. I took my card and put it down. "Uno."
