xli. everything is loud and angry

"JANICE!" I heard Dad shout.

Uh oh. This meant Mom and Dad were going to fight. I went into my room, but I could still hear them.

"What is it, Neil?" Mom asked.

"Did you say that McKenna couldn't talk to Aaron?"

Oh. So this was about me.

"It was for the best," Mom said. "She needs to learn to be friends with the right people."

"Janice, you were the one who said she should make friends. So don't take away the friends she has."

"She can always make new ones. Like that one boy...the African-American kid? With the glasses?"

"Justin?"

"Yeah, him. So she has other friends. I don't know why this is such a big deal," Mom said.

It was a big deal because Aaron was my friend and I wanted to see him! Mom could be really mean sometimes.

"Maybe you should ask McKenna! You never take her feelings into account!" Dad screamed.

That was true. Mom never listened to me. Sometimes it felt like she would never change her mind about anything. Then again, I was like that sometimes too. I didn't want to me like Mom though.

"I'm only doing what's best!" Mom shouted.

"Well, you're not doing a very good job!!"

"You know what Neil? I really hate you sometimes."

"Then the feeling is mutual."

Mutual - (of a feeling or action) experienced or done by each of two or more parties toward the other or others

I figured one of them had just stormed away, because I couldn't hear anything else. It was all over, but I knew that they were both still mad. I had to stay out of their way for the rest of the night.

I wanted to climb into the treehouse, but I didn't know what was going on out there. Besides, it was dark and the treehouse was really scary when it was dark. So I just hid in my room. I hoped Mom and Dad wouldn't find me.
