xl. summertime and secret meetings

I was in the treehouse once again. I still couldn't see Aaron, but maybe this would get around it. Dad was at work and Mom was inside making lunch. I looked out the window. Nobody was here yet. I just kept waiting.

I felt the tree shake a little. I looked down, and I could see Aaron climbing up the tree. I waved to him, and he waved back. Then, Aaron crawled into the treehouse.

"Hi McKenna," he said.

"Hi Aaron!" I shouted. "Is Justin coming?"

"I think so," Aaron said.

"Hey! I need a little help here!" I heard Justin shout from the bottom of the tree. Justin was trying to climb up the tree, but he kept falling off. He was never very good at stuff like this. I climbed down the tree and set up the ladder for Justin. He climbed into the treehouse with us.

"So what was this meeting for?" Justin asked.

"I don't know! I just wanted to hang out with you guys."

"Well, I built this awesome catapult that I wanted to show you." Justin dug through his bag and took out a big wooden catapult.

"Nice!" Aaron shouted. "What are we going to do with it?"

"I don't know," Justin said.

"We should use it to throw things at people!" Aaron shouted.

Justin rolled his eyes. "That's kind of what it's for."

Aaron opened the treehouse window and put the catapult there. "You know, my mom would kill me if she knew we were doing this," I said.

Aaron sighed. "Fine," he said. "We won't throw it at people."

I looked through the mini-fridge Dad had put in the treehouse. There was lots of food in there, but I gave Aaron a watermelon. Aaron put in on the catapult.

"This is going to be so cool!" Aaron shouted. He launched the catapult. The watermelon flew through the air and splattered on a nearby tree. Chunks of watermelon flew in every direction.

And that was how I saw an exploding watermelon.
