xlv. math and how much i hate it
I found that fourth grade was actually a little easier than third grade. Maybe it was because the teacher was better. There was still one bad thing though.
Math.
There were so many reasons why I hated math. It was hard. I didn't get it. Nothing made any sense. None of my classmates really understood it either. Except for Justin. Justin was smart. Everyone knew he had the best grades in the class. I guess it was good that he was my friend. He helped me a lot.
My grades in math still weren't very good though. I knew Mom wanted me to get good grades, and she would kill me if my math grade got any lower. I needed help, so I set up a day to study with Justin.
When I got to his house, Rebecca answered the door.
"Hi McKenna!" she said. "I haven't seen you in forever!"
"Where's Robin?" I asked. It was weird seeing Rebecca without her twin sister.
"Some dumb poetry thing," Rebecca said.
"Poetry's not dumb," I said.
"Whatever," Rebecca said. "I presume you're here to see Justin anyways."
I nodded and she led me to Justin's room. He was sitting on his bed and listening to music. "Hi McKenna," he said, taking his headphones out.
"So are we studying?" I asked.
Justin nodded. He took out a bunch of worksheets, including the one that was this week's homework. "What exactly did you need help with?"
"Everything," I said.
Justin laughed. "I'm sure you know more than that," he said. "What's two plus two?"
"Four," I said.
"Then you know something. What's forty-five divided by nine?"
I thought for a while. Those numbers were too big. "I don't know."
"It's easy," Justin said. "Nine times what is forty five?"
"Five," I said.
"That's the answer," Justin said. He took out the homework and started explaining the rest. Multiplying, dividing, fractions, negative numbers, and all of that.
Finally, it all started to make sense.
