cii. learning new things and taking brooklyn to camp
The week before school started, Brooklyn was going off to summer camp, so of course, Shonali made me drive her there. It was a simple task, but I didn't really want to do it. Not only would I have to spend two hours in the car with Brooklyn, but Shonali would have to come too, since I was still on my permit. I was more than ready to get my license, but I had to wait until I turned sixteen next month.
I was stuck packing Brooklyn's stuff into the back. She would only be gone for a week. There was no way she needed this much stuff, not to mention the fact that she would never be able to carry it. Actually, I wasn't even sure if she would be able to carry it even if she had help from Shonali and I. That was how much stuff there was.
I took the keys and got into the driver's seat. I carefully backed out of the driveway and Shonali gave me some directions. Brooklyn was watching a movie in the back. Shonali turned the radio to some annoying pop station.
"Kenna?" Brooklyn asked.
"What?" I said.
"Can we get ice cream?"
I looked at Shonali, but she shook her head. "Sorry Brooklyn," I said. "Maybe some other time. Hopefully after I get my license."
"Yay! Ice cream!"
It was adorable, really. All of these little things mattered so much to Brooklyn. Then again, I was the same way when I was that age. I continued to drive and Shonali continued to bother me about how I should have merged sooner or how I really should have gone through that yellow light. It was all little stuff though. I knew I would pass my road test, but I wouldn't even get there if I didn't survive this one car ride. Hopefully Shonali would drive on the way back.
We finally arrived at camp. I could see the little cabins and the counselors standing around to greet us. Brooklyn was in Cheyenne cabin, so we looked for that counselor. Luckily, she was easy to find.
The hardest part was watching Shonali. We both knew that Brooklyn would be back in a week, but I could tell that she was sad to see her little girl go. "Have a good time sweetheart," she said to Brooklyn.
"I will Mommy," Brooklyn said. "Bye Mommy! Bye Kenna!"
"Bye Brooklyn," Shonali and I said in unison.
And off Brooklyn went.
