xxx. starry skies and smoky fires
"Are we there yet?" Noah asked.
The sky was starting to turn darker, but the sun was exploding and showing off its bright colors. It felt like we had been driving forever. I checked the time. 7:43. Daddy said around four that we would be there in another hour. That wasn't true. Maybe we would be there soon.
"Not quite," Daddy said.
"How much longer?" I asked.
"Because I really need to go," Noah said.
"We'll be there soon," Daddy said.
"How soon is soon?" Noah asked. "I still need to go."
"Soon," Daddy said.
There were fewer and fewer houses as we drove along. There were lots of trees though. There were big trees and small trees and little bushes and green and brown things of all sorts. Then there was the stripe of concrete running through it all and our little blue car running on that.
Finally, we arrived at a patch of bare grass. Daddy parked the car there. "Welcome to the campsite," Daddy said.
It wasn't Disney World. It wasn't Paris. It wasn't Odiosis either. I decided it was good enough. I set down my backpack and watched Mommy start setting up the tent. Daddy was trying to make a fire.
"What's for dinner?" I asked.
"Hot dogs," Daddy said.
"Yay!" Noah shouted. "Hot dogs!"
"I thought we were having grilled cheese," I said, pouting.
"That's tomorrow night," Daddy said.
The fire started going. It crackled and burned and it gave off a nice, smoky smell. I took my hot dog and started cooking it. Daddy showed me exactly how to hold it over the fire. He guided my hand and showed me the best spot and he showed me how to rotate it so it would cook evenly. After I finished, he wrapped it in a bun and put a little ketchup on it.
After dinner, it was time for bed. I was tired anyways. We had been driving all day. Mommy didn't want us to stop driving, so we didn't. Mommy had already set up my sleeping bag, so I crawled into it. It was cozy, but I liked having all of my stuffed animals there. Mommy let me bring one, so I chose Bronto. She always said that now that I was almost nine, I was really too old to be sleeping with all of my stuffed animals. I liked having them there though.
I took Bronto into my arms and I snuggled up into the sleeping bag. I quickly looked outside of the tent. There were stars. Lots of them. This was better than Disney World or anywhere else. I smiled and crawled back into the sleeping bag.
