xvi. clouds and daydreams
"Do you see that cloud?" Aaron asked me.
It was recess, and since the snow had melted, Aaron and I passed the time by looking up at the sky. That day, the sky was a light blue and there were lots of puffy clouds to look at. I leaned against a tree in the back of the playground. Nobody could bother us here. "Which one?" I asked.
"The one that looks like a donut," Aaron said, pointing at the sky.
I saw the cloud Aaron was pointing at. It didn't really look like a donut at all. There wasn't really a hole. "That's not a donut," I said. "That's a cookie."
"But there's a big hole in the middle," Aaron said.
"That's a really tiny hole. Like a chocolate chip in a cookie."
"Donut!"
"Cookie!"
"Donut!"
"Cookie!"
"Donut!"
"I think we're both just hungry," I said.
"Yeah," Aaron said, laughing. Really, I was kind of hungry though. Good thing we had lunch next. I was planning to get grilled cheese today. I loved grilled cheese. It was my favorite food. Mommy's grilled cheese was better than the school's grilled cheese though.
"What about that one?" I pointed at another cloud.
"That looks like an elephant," Aaron said.
"Yeah, it kind of does," I said. I could see the trunk and the tusks and the big body.
"So it's an elephant eating a donut," Aaron said.
I giggled. "Yeah." That just seemed so silly. An elephant eating a donut. But Aaron was silly, and I liked it that way.
Aaron kept staring up at the sky and so did I. If only Bronto was here with us. He would love this.
They called us in for lunch. I took one last look at the elephant eating a donut. That day, I learned a new word.
Bliss - perfect happiness; great joy
