lxxii. lunch and losing sleep
The lunchroom was loud, as usual. It was impossible to focus on anything. Justin was sitting next to me, playing on his phone. The game he was playing seemed kind of stupid, but who was I to judge?
Aaron sat down across from me. "Hey McKenna," he said. He started eating an ice cream sandwich. Aaron's lunches had become increasingly unhealthy, but they really were the only things that tasted good in the lunchroom.
"Ooh! These are the ones that have corny jokes on the wrappers!" Aaron exclaimed. "Want to hear mine?"
"No," I said, even though I knew from experience that he would tell me anyways.
"Why didn't the skeleton go to the dance? He didn't have the guts!" Aaron laughed, but none of the rest of us found it funny.
"His jokes are just getting worse and worse," Justin whispered to me. I nodded.
"I heard that!" Aaron exclaimed. Justin simply went back to playing his game. Aaron looked over his shoulder. "Whatcha playing?" he asked.
"Angry Birds," Justin replied.
"Cool. Can I try?"
"Nope. Get in on your own phone."
"Please?"
"Fine." Justin gave Aaron his phone and Aaron started playing. After a few minutes, Aaron offered it to me. I took the phone and started playing. The game seemed so silly, but I played anyways. Then I handed it back to Justin.
"Fruit Ninja is way better anyways," Justin said.
"My phone's not that great," I said. "It won't let me download anything."
"That sucks," Justin said.
"I know," I replied. I took out my science worksheet and started working on it. I was just so tired. Oh well. That was how middle school worked.
