xxxiii. back to school and helping noah
It was the first day of third grade. I was pretty excited. I couldn't wait to see Aaron and Justin again. I had called both of them a few weeks earlier and they were both in my class.
"Are you ready Noah?" Mom asked. Noah was walking close to Mommy like I did on my first day of kindergarten. Now I was the big sister and I had to help him.
Noah nodded. "Yeah," he said. He still seemed worried though.
I looked around for Aaron. He was standing there waiting for me. "Hi Aaron," I said. I tried to stay with them. A lot of the mean big kids were gone this year, but there were still some there. I tried to stay away from them.
"McKenna!" he shouted. He smiled. "I can't wait for the first day of school."
"Are you sure you're Aaron?" I asked. Aaron never liked school. He was always complaining. "Maybe aliens took over your brain."
"They didn't," Aaron said. "I don't like the learning part of school."
"Neither do I, but that's the point of school," I said.
"I like recess though. I missed that."
I laughed. "But summer is like one big, long recess!"
Aaron shrugged. "I guess so."
The bus came. Noah went closer to Mom. "Come on Noah," I said.
"I don't want to go," Noah said.
I grabbed Noah's wrist and practically dragged him onto the bus. He sat down across from Aaron and I.
"Who's that?" Aaron asked.
"My little brother Noah," I said. "He's in kindergarten."
"Oh okay," Aaron said.
It was weird being in third grade. We weren't new anymore. We knew our way around, so we didn't have the excuse of not knowing things, because we did. We still weren't at the top though. There were still those mean big kids.
"McKenna?" Noah said.
"What?" I asked.
"I don't know where my class is," he said.
"What class are you in?" I asked, even though all of the kindergarten classes were right next to each other.
"Mrs. Stumph's class," he said.
"That's the class we were in!" I said to Aaron.
"I know. You'll have to ask if she remembers us," Aaron said to Noah.
"She hated you," I told Aaron.
"No she didn't."
"Where is it?" Noah asked.
"Once you get inside, you take a right and then a left and then it's the first classroom you come across," I said.
"Can you walk me there?" Noah asked as we reached the school.
"Sure," I said. We got off the bus and I walked to Mrs. Stumph's room. Mrs. Stumph was standing in front of the classroom.
"McKenna!" she said. "How are you? You've grown so much!"
"I'm doing well, Mrs. Stumph," I said.
"And you must be Noah," she said to him. Noah nodded. "Welcome to kindergarten." She led him into the classroom and I headed off to my class. I was ready for whatever third grade had to offer.
