cxv. prom and why i said yes
“Where are you going Kenna?” Brooklyn asked me.
“Prom,” I told her. I was getting ready for Aaron to pick me up, and he was already late. I was kind of hoping that he forgot that prom was tonight or something. I still didn’t want to go. Besides, this dress was kind of uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, Aaron came a few minutes later. “I have to go Brooklyn,” I said once I spotted Aaron’s car in the driveway. “I’ll see you soon.”
“Bye Kenna!” Brooklyn exclaimed. I dashed out the door and hopped into the passenger seat of Aaron’s car, which was really his mom’s minivan.
“Hey McKenna,” he said. “You look really pretty tonight.”
“Thanks,” I said. “You look nice too.” It was true. Aaron did look pretty good in that tuxedo.
“I’m super excited for this,” Aaron said.
“I’m not,” I grumbled.
“Oh come on. You’ll have fun,” Aaron said.
“No I won’t,” I replied.
We arrived at the high school. Aaron and I got out of the car. “Is Justin going to be here?” I asked Aaron.
“I don’t know,” Aaron said.
Justin didn’t seem like the type of person who would go to prom. There were too many crappy pop songs playing and a lot of better ways to spend that time. I didn’t exactly enjoy the music, but it was the excessive amount of human interaction that I despised.
Aaron and I entered the school, and I was already overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people. It seemed like our entire class and the seniors were congregated into one gymnasium. Aaron immediately darted to the snack bar. I rolled my eyes. Typical Aaron. I followed him anyways. He got his food and then he headed back out onto the dance floor.
“Why do we have to do this?” I shouted over the music.
“Because it’s fun!” Aaron said. He continued doing some weird, awkward dance that he apparently thought was good. I awkwardly start moving around, hoping that I would fit in with the more enthusiastic dancers.
The song changed. “Ugh, I hate this song,” Aaron said. “Let’s go.” Aaron and I headed out into the hallway. “I don’t really like any of the songs they’re playing, but that one’s particularly awful.”
“You sound like Justin,” I said.
“He’s influencing me,” Aaron replied. “Are you having fun?”
“No, but it’s a little better than I thought it would be.”
“Okay good,” Aaron said.
We didn’t stay that much longer. Aaron and I left after we took our pictures and Aaron took one more stop at the snack bar. After that, we headed back to my house and climbed up to the treehouse. We opened up the door to let in the fresh air and sat there near the door, admiring the stars. The night felt too perfect.
“I had a really good time tonight,” Aaron said.
I shrugged. “I guess it wasn’t bad. It’s really pretty out here.”
Aaron nodded. “It really is.”
“The best part is that it’s just us,” I said.
Aaron put his arm around me and said, “I think that is the best part. You know McKenna, I...I really like you.”
“Me too Aaron,” I said. “Me too.”
