xxxviii. food fights and getting in trouble

When Aaron and I entered the cafeteria, everyone else had already gotten their food. We both got in line for hot lunch. The line went by quickly since it was just us. The mac and cheese was gross and tasted like plastic, but it was food. We sat down next to Justin.

"Where were you?" Justin asked.

Aaron laughed. "We were putting salt in Mrs. Brown's coffee."

"Won't you get in trouble for that?" Justin asked.

"Of course not!" Aaron said. "She'll never catch us. Besides, it's April Fool's."

Justin shrugged. "Don't blame me if you get into trouble."

Just then, one of the big kids that always bothered us on the bus walked right in front of us. Aaron took his tray of mac and cheese and dumped it on her head.

"YOU JERK!" she shouted. She ran her hands through her hair, but it only made it worse. "I'm telling the lunch supervisors."

Aaron laughed. "April Fool's," he said.

The big kid splashed her chocolate milk on Aaron's shirt. "I'm telling the teacher." She stormed away. There was still orange sauce in her hair.

"That was kind of mean," Justin said.

"Yeah, it was," I said.

"So?" Aaron said. "It's April Fool's!"

A few more of the big kids ran over to us. They all dumped their food on us. While I was trying to get the pizza sauce off of me, one of them said, "That's what you get for messing with our friend."

Before we could do anything, a few kindergarteners had joined in on the fun. Eventually, it spread throughout the lunchroom, with everyone wanting revenge. I ducked under the table, trying to avoid the flying spaghetti. Someone still went under the table and threw a pear at me.

"ENOUGH!!!" someone shouted. I looked up. It was the principal. I got out from under the table and pretended to eat what was left of my mac and cheese. "This is unacceptable behavior from all of you! There will be no outdoor recess for the rest of this week. If I ever find out who started this, there will be worse punishments."

"It was Aaron!" the big kid with mac and cheese in her hair shouted. "He started it! He threw mac and cheese at me! I think his little friends were involved too."

This was one of the many times I just wanted to disappear. Every eye in the cafeteria was on Aaron, Justin, and I.

"All of you! To the office!" the principal shouted.

I didn't want to go. Mom would definitely find out about this. But somehow, I walked over there, ready to face whatever punishments would come.
