Elena and Stefan are mean.

Really mean.

Like really really mean.

They volunteered for me to go on a road trip with Damon and Alaric to Duke University so we could look through Isobel's research.

Apparently she had spent years studying Mystic Falls and Damon thought she might've discovered what the Lockwoods are.

"Chin up, Smiley." Damon smirked as he put the last bag into the trunk of the car. "I'm not so bad."

"Keep telling yourself that, pal." I patted him on the back and made my way back inside. This was going to be a long day.

Stefan was in the kitchen so I decided to give him some company.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" He asked as he saw the expression I was wearing as I walked to stand beside him.

"Well seeing as I didn't have a choice, yes I'm okay with doing this." I assured him. "Take care of Caroline for me please."

"I'll do my best."

"I know you will." I smiled small and we went into a silence, until it was broken by Damon's honking from outside.

"Lily!" Jenna shouted from the front door.

"Coming!" I shouted back and made my way to her. "You okay?" I questioned after seeing the look on her face.

"Yeah, just men and their luggage."

"Tell me about it." I brought her into a hug and said goodbye before going back to the car.

"Sorry you can't come too." Damon said to his brother and Elena who were stood by the driver's door together.

"Call us if you need anything."

"Oh, I'll take really good care of her." Damon smirked in my direction making me feel a tad bit uncomfortable. What was that supposed to mean? "Okay, time to go."

"See you later losers." I said before climbing into the back seat. Yes I did say backseat. The two 'macho' men wouldn't let me sit up front even though I shotgunned it.

"Be careful." Elena warned in her motherly tone.

"Yes, ma'am." I saluted in a mocking manner.

"Goodbye." Stefan waved as we began to drive away.

As the minutes turned into hours of peaceful silence, Damon decided it would be a good idea to confront me and my feelings.

"How are you doing back there? You know, this whole pretending to hate me thing is getting a little silly."

"I don't think she's pretending. You did attempt to kill her best friend." Alaric spoke for me as I stayed in silence, watching the scenery change through the window.

"There is a huge asterisk next to that statement: I didn't." He corrected, as if that helped his case.

"You already know how I feel so I don't know why you're questioning me." I said and caught his eye in the rearview mirror.

That shut him up thankfully.

I was trying to hold a grudge against him (which I'm not very good at anyways) when all I really wanted to do was to just be like we used to be. Carefree, fun and exciting.

Why did he make things so difficult.

"Are we there yet?" I asked, knowing it would wind Damon up.

"Just a few more hours to go." Ric replied.
