Chapter 3: Taking care of McKenzie

Y/N's POV

Me Clem, and Duck were sitting together, McKenzie then started coughing out blood. Lee wiped off the blood and he went to tell Kenny to stop the train. Carley went with him. Duck wasn't talking to us, so me and Clem talked.

Clementine: Y/N?

Y/N: Clem?

Clementine: McKenzie is dying.

She whispered so Duck wouldn't hear

Y/N: I know.

Clementine: And I been thinking lately.

Y/N: Yeah?

Clementine: What if this happens to you?

I then see tears drop from her eyes.

Y/N: You do?

She then starts crying.

Clementine: Yeah, An-And I-I don't want that to happen to you!

I then pull her to a hug as she cries in my shoulders

Y/N: It won't happen, I promise.

Clementine: What if it happens to me?

Y/N: That won't happen either, I will protect you.

Clementine: You don't know that.

Y/N: Trust me Clem, I know.

Then the train stops. We all got out as we saw McKenzie even worse.

Katjaa: Ken, It's... I think it's time.

Everyone looked at McKenzie with a sad look. Duck had tears come down his face. Then Kenny looked at Chuck.

Kenny: The girl's been bit. In case you haven't figured that out.

Lee: What do you need?

Kenny: I... I.....

Lee: Katjaa?

Katjaa: It's time to.... this is not possible.

Kenny: What are we gonna do?

Katjaa: We can't allow her to become one of those things.

Kenny: But what if? What if she doesn't?

Katjaa: Kenny, I love you very much. I love our son more then life itself. I need you to hear me. What you are saying, that she may not turn, is foolish.

Kenny: But-

Katjaa: No.

Kenny: There's... Come on Kat.

Katjaa: If you think of one, you let me know.

Kenny: Isn't there some sort of pill, or something we can just give her....

Katjaa: Stop it.

Kenny: She can just drift off to sleep, right, hon? I mean, Jesus, this is our daughter.

Katjaa: I KNOW. But we know it's... here. Or nothing.

She said pointing at her head.

Kenny: Well... fuck... just... who then? You want me to?

Lee: Kenny, you're his dad. You do it.

Katjaa: And I'm his mother.

Kenny: Lee's right. And don't give me that "I brought him into this world" junk.

Katjaa: Shush. She's still a baby girl. It would be different if she were older. Let me do this.

Kenny: Then I'm coming with you.

Katjaa: No hon. Stay with Lee. Your daughter loves you and you should remember her as the nice girl we used to have. Not this.

Katjaa then picked up McKenzie and was about to carry her to the forest.

Kenny: I can't.

Katjaa: Lee, be with him?

She then walked off. Me and Clem walked towards Lee.

Clementine: What's happening.

Lee: Duck is dying.

Y/N: I know.

Clementine: What is Katjaa doing?

Lee: She's making sure she's okay.

Y/N: But how? She's bitten.

Lee: She's making sure he doesn't come back.

Y/N: Oh.

Lee: Look guys, things wil-

Then we heard a gunshot.

Kenny: NOOO, GOD....!

Duck: Did---Did she?

Lee: This will never happen to you guys.

I nod.

Clementine: You don't know that.

Duck stays silent.

Lee: Yes I do.

Y/N: Same here.

Kenny: I'm gonna go get her. She's probably a mess. Duck, stay here.

Duck nods.

Lee: Ben, get Clementine, Y/N, and Duck on the train, all right? And keep your eyes open.

Lee and Carley went with Kenny to find Katjaa. We get on the train. Duck started crying again, me and Clem wrap our arms around him. Then me and Clem start sobbing. I will miss McKenzie, she was not annoying like Duck. And she was nice to have around. Then Lee and Kenny came back, no Katjaa.

Duck: Dad? Wheres Mom?

Kenny had tears coming down his face and stayed silent. We knew what happened. Duck then cried worse. Kenny hugged him as Duck hugged back.

Kenny: I won't lose you too. I won't let it happen!

Lee and Carley comes to us. Me and Clem hugged them both. They hugged back.

Carley: Me and Lee will do whatever we can to keep this from happening to you guys.

Lee: Yeah, we'll protect you. All of you.

We let go, Kenny goes back to the front of the train. Then the train started moving. Me and Clem were sitting together. Duck decided to go with Kenny. Then Chuck walked towards us.

Chuck: Now Y/N, you will be fine. But Clem and Duck, you are gonna die.

Clementine: What?!

She was now scared, I got angry.

Y/N: Don't tell her that!!!

Chuck: I'm not trying to be rude, I'm saying this because it's true.

Y/N: NO IT'S NOT! LEAVE HER ALONE!!!!!!

Chuck then walked away. Clem started crying again, I quickly pull her in a hug, she hugs back.

Clementine: I don't wanna die!

Y/N: You won't Clem. I will protect you. I will even sacrifice my own life if it meant saving you.

Clementine: But then YOU would die!

She then cried even more.

Y/N: I won't. but if it comes down to it, you will NOT die!

Clementine: Why would you even do that for?!

Y/N: So you can see your parents again! I lost my family! I don't have anyone anymore.

Clementine: I'm here. You have me. We are a team.

She calmed down. She was still sobbing, but she calmed down.

Y/N: Thanks Clem.

We let go of the hug and watched the trees and bushes pass.
