Marinette sat on the steps of the Champ de Mars. She watched couples laughing and smiling together as they took photos in front of the Eiffel Tower. She brought her legs to her chest and hugged them. The image of Adrien with that girl continued to play in her mind. She cleared her throat from the cough that was forming.
"There you are" She looked up to see you smiling at her. You still held your drink and the bag with your jacket. Her eyes were a bit red and puffy. She didn't look like the happy girl that you saw back at the bakery. You sat next to her. "What's wrong"
Marinette moved her gaze downwards. She sniffed and wiped away the remaining tears. "I'm sorry for calling you out here. I didn't know who to call, and then I just ended up calling you and I -" She sighed. "I'm sorry. You were probably out having fun with your friend"
"There's no need to be sorry" You smiled at her. "I know that we haven't known each other long, but I'm already considering you as a friend. I knew something was wrong the moment I heard your voice over the phone, and as a friend, I want to make sure that you're okay. You don't have to tell me anything if you want to. We could just sit here in silence if you want. It's up to you"
Marinette smiled at you. She looked back at the large tourist sight. The number of couples no longer bothered her. She took a deep breath. "I saw my soulmate"
"Oh?" Shouldn't that be a good thing?
"And he, uh, he was with this girl"
Oh.
"I would usually think nothing of it because it's normal for guys and girls to be friends, but then my tattoo..." Marinette looked down at her mark. "It started to hurt"
She ran her fingers over the drawing, still feeling the light pain. Her tears were building up again. You scooted closer to her and pulled her into a hug. Marinette buried her head in the crook of your neck. You rubbed your hands on her back in a soothing manner. You don't need to hear anything else.
"It's okay. I understand. I get the feeling" You soothed.
"You do?" She pulled back, sniffing.
You turned your attention straight ahead. You haven't told anyone about the pains. The only ones that do know are your family, but they think it's nothing to worry about. No one knows about the flowers though. You do your best to keep it that way.
"My wrist," You looked down at the tattoo. The teal-colored snake was wrapped around an acoustic guitar. It made you think about how beautiful your soulmate's eyes are. And you think that without ever seeing them up close. You just knew that they were. "It's been hurting for such a long time. My parents and doctors did everything they can to find out why, but they just figured that something was wrong with my soulmate and I was feeling their pain. It wasn't until recently that I realized that the pain was coming from my soulmate not... my soulmate not wanting me"
"I'm sorry" Marinette placed a hand on your back.
"Why are you sorry? You're not responsible for this" You laughed, taking a deep breath. Marinette continued to look at you with a concerned gaze. "I actually never met him. I just saw him from afar. But I knew. I knew that he was my soulmate. He's handsome and judging by my tattoo, he's into music too. A part of me was excited to meet him, but the pain made me scared. I thought that he was severely injured or sick. Him loving another was the only option that I was scared of thinking about. Yet it came true."
"Do you know the person he fell in love with?" Marinette rested her head on your shoulder. You rested yours on hers too.
"No, but I think he would be much better off with the person he likes" You sighed. "I never saw this person either. I can just tell by the way he looked in their direction that they were someone special to him. They're something that I can never be"
