4:00 AM

Was so early

To be

Waking up.

I pretended to sleep.

But I heard Frank getting up.

Sliding on his jeans,

And with an odd cackle,

I had assumed he put a belt on.

I heard him slip on a shirt.

I decided to open my eyes

Before he left.

"I was listening to you the while time, you know."

"I had a feeling," he laughed.

I decided to put on my clothes

That were laying on the floor

From yesterday.

I rush to him

And embrace him.

"I'm gonna miss you." I tell him.

"I'm gonna miss you too." he tells me back, "and please, don't take that stuff. I've been looking for it so much, and I can't find it anywhere, but I know you have it. Gerard, some of the things you do are so uncanny, because I swear I'm rechecking every crack and crevasse but I never find anything."

I laugh, "my sugar won't hurt me."

There.

One puzzle piece

Or perhaps the only answer.

It literally was sugar.

"Gerard, what is that a metaphor for?"

"It's what it is, Frankie."

He stayed silent through that,

I don't know what he was doing,

because he shouldn't be doing anything.

That reaction wasn't supposed to happen.

"When do you leave?" I asked.

"I'm going to be gone by five."

It was 4:50.

I gave a peck on his lips,

"You should get ready then."
