___________________________________________________________________________________________________Back at the bureau, Zay and Farkle were trying to catch up on their paperwork as they were sitting behind their desks and leaning over their stacks. They hadn't gotten a case in the last week, making work very boring and bland. Two words that weren't usually associated with a job like the FBI.
Zay leaned up from his desk and sighed before cracking his back and his neck. He looked over at Farkle, who was busy scribbling away on his papers, then he looked over at Maya's empty desk, frowning at the void that they had all felt since she left to go undercover.
Looking back at Farkle's desk, Zay noticed that he had way less paperwork than he had. Smirking slightly, Zay took several of his folders and slowly started moving towards Farkle's desk. Farkle was so focused that Zay knew he wouldn't notice.
He got just a few inches away, hovered the stack right over Farkle's untouched stack and-
"Don't even think about it."
Zay groaned as he slumped back into his desk chair with the folders still in hand as he slammed them down on his desk.
"Dude no fair! You can do half the amount of paperwork that I can in an hour. Just take some of mine." Zay said.
"No. I'm already pulling double with mine and Maya's paperwork. She won't be able to do it while she's gone and it's not fair to her to have to come back in three months to a deal with overflowing files." Farkle said.
"You're too nice," Zay stated.
"Maya's my partner. You're not." Farkle said. Zay went to say something but Farkle cut him off. "Being on the same team does not make us partners. When Maya gets back she'll be able to go out into the field, however, If she comes back to a bunch of paperwork she'll more than likely be put on desk duty until it's done. Then I would have to partner with you. And there is no way I'm partnering with you." Farkle finished. Zay stuck his tongue out at Farkle.
"Anybody heard how Maya's therapy appointment went today?" Lucas asked as he came from around the corner and sat down in his chair with a fresh cup of coffee.
"No. But Riley's here." Zay stated.
"She is?" Lucas asked as he looked around the bullpen as if expecting to see her.
"She's in Josh's office talking to him," Farkle answered. Lucas pursed his lips together.
"Oh boy." He stated.
"What?" Mia asked as she joined in on the conversation. Lucas took a sip of his coffee.
"Well, let's just say I wouldn't want to be Josh right now."
~"Riley, is this really important right now?" Josh asked as he sat back in his chair and rubbed his temples with his eyes closed as he addressed his niece.
"Of course it's important! It's Maya!" Riley exclaimed. Josh rubbed his temples harder. "There is a way to take care of her, and I need to make sure you're doing it right!"
"Riley, we lived together at one point. I'm pretty sure I remember how Maya likes her tacos!" Josh told her. He couldn't believe that they were even having this discussion.
"Well, obviously not since she hasn't had one in forever!" Riley sassed. "Now, you remember how she takes her coffee. And why it's important to not wake her up until it's an hour before she has to leave for work. And-"
"Riley!" Josh cut her off. "I love you, and I love that you're so protective of Maya even after all these years. But I have to work, and I'm pretty sure Maya gets done with her appointment soon, so you need to go pick her-"
"I know what time Maya gets out of her appointment, uncle Josh!" Riley told him. "And I know that you two have lived with each other before, but it's important to me that you get some facts straight before this goes any further," Riley stated.
"Sure. If it gets you out of my office faster than please, share." Josh told her. Riley gave him a sarcastic smile.
"You two aren't together anymore, which means it might be awkward for the two of you to try and get along while she's in recovery," Riley said. Josh pursed his lips together. He didn't know if Maya wanted him to tell Riley that they were back together or not. So he decided not to say anything unless she did. "So let me just tell you this, I love both of you very much. And I don't want either of you to get hurt again like you did last time. So if you two at any point feel like you can't handle things, then I think that maybe I should move in with Maya and take care of her."
Josh raised an eyebrow. "And have you spoken to your husband about this?" He asked. Riley scoffed.
"I don't have to ask permission." She said.
"No. But I bet it would be nice for him to know that you're planning on leaving him for three months." Josh told her. "Besides, that won't be necessary, I think Maya and I have both reached a common ground to where we can get along."
"We'll be that as it may, I will be checking in on Maya periodically to make sure she's comfortable and that you are treating her right," Riley said. Josh shook his head at his niece. He never thought he could ever be as annoyed as he was right now.
A knock on the door sounded causing the two to look over at the door."Sorry to interrupt," Lucas said as he opened the door. "Can I come in?" He asked.
"Please," Josh said almost desperately as he noticed his way out of the conversation.
"Riley-" Lucas started.
"I already talk you, Lucas. When it comes to Maya, you have no say." Riley stated.
"Actually I was just going to say that Maya called and got out of her appointment a little earlier than expected," Lucas stated. Riley let out a huff as she looked over at Josh.
"This isn't over." She grabbed onto Kaylie's stroller and walked past Lucas out of Josh's office. Josh gave Lucas a pointed glare, and Lucas gave him an apologetic smile.
"Also, the camera crew is already here and set up for Maya's apology today. They're just waiting on her to get here." Josh sighed and nodded as Lucas walked out of the room and shut the door behind him.
Josh had felt like he lived 100 years in just the last six months, ever since he had taken over this unit really. He often wondered if maybe requesting a transfer wasn't such a bad thing, and if there was a chance he could make sure that he stayed in New York, it would be really tempting for him not to.
The phone rang, it was already a few rings in before Josh rubbed his face with his hands and answered the call.
"Matthews." He said into the phone as he kept one hand on the phone and the other on his face. There was static and silence on the other end. "Hello?" He asked again. He could hear some heavy breathing, and his eyes narrowed. "Who is this?" He asked.
But the line went dead and the dial tone in the background caused Josh to bring the phone away from him and give it a glare. He didn't have enough patience to deal with this. Pranks, wrong number, or whatever the hell it was. So instead he hung up the phone and got out of his chair.
He prayed for any strength he could get at this point as he stacked up the paperwork that he was working on the back of his desk and walked out the door.
As he left, the phone rang again, but Josh was already out the door and didn't hear it.
