_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________On the way back to David's house, Maya kept her gaze out the window as she thought back to all the looks everyone had given her when she had said that she had to do this without them. That she needed to be on her own for this. It was heartbreaking. Especially Farkle.
Her team was everything to her. And the more she thought about what Michael was saying in the room, the more she realized that he was right. If Carry had told them about the assignment, they all could have been killed. David's focus was on killing Carry, not them. If something were to happen, and David was to find out that she was undercover this whole time and that her team was working on the case as well, they all would be dead.
She hoped they would understand, this was for the fact that she was trying to protect them, Maya needed to keep a low profile. She couldn't give David any reason to be suspicious. She had been realizing just what he would do to people who double crossed him. She had to be the one to take him down, to finish what Carry started, and she had to do it alone.
"I'm sorry that I had to be so rough with your team back there." Michael told her. Maya sighed as she looked away from the window and focused her attention on Michael.
"It's not your fault. You're right. I need to start focusing more on this undercover assignment and start letting my guard down a little bit where David is concerned. I have to do my job." She told him.
"If anything happens to you, I'll make sure they get to be the ones that take David down once and for all. I guess, we owe them that." He told her. Maya smiled and nodded her head.
"And they will. If anything happens to me, I know they wont stop until David is caught. No matter what." And her thoughts strayed back to Josh, and the moments they spent together in his office. Maya smiled as she thought about the way he touched her, remembered how it felt to be in his arms again. It felt like time had run back, and they were suddenly in love for the first time again.
"David will want to know everything that happened between you and your mother today." Michael told her. "Just remember to stick to your story." Maya nodded.
"Dont worry, I'm about to step it up as far as David is concerned. I'm not staying in this house for two years. I'm going to catch him, I'm going to take him down. And then I'm going home." She thought of her team, no. They were more than that. Maya smiled. "I'm going home to my family."
They pulled up to the house and got out of the car. Maya could see David's office window from where the driveway was. She looked up and noticed that he was staring down at them, he turned away when she saw him. This caused her to become nervous.
Michael led her up the steps and into the house. It was unusually quiet. Lydia was no where to be found, none of the women were. Michael seemed to have the same thought as he looked around the place. He started up the stairs, Maya followed him. They got to the office door and knocked.
"Come in." David called out. They both walked in. Maya beamed at him, this seemed to catch David off guard as he gave her a once over. "Your visit went well then?" He asked. Maya nodded as she came to stand beside him.
"I missed my mom. She was worried that I hadn't talked to her in a while. But I told her I had been busy at work. It was so great to get to see her." Maya put a far off look on her face before she looked right into David's eyes. "Thank you." She said.
David stared at her for a moment, as if he was trying to decide if he believed her or not. But Maya was an incredible actor. And after a moment, his face broke out into a grin.
"You're welcome." Maya leaned in and hugged him. David smiled bigger as he pulled her in close and hugged her back. Maya closed her eyes, and she pictured Josh's face in her mind, his hands against her waist, his body that she was up against. David pulled back. "Why dont you get washed up. I'd like to take you out somewhere tonight." He told her. Maya smiled at him.
"That sounds lovely." She said. She leaned up and kissed him. David was taken back by this very much. He kissed her back and she let go of him and walked out the door. Michael stayed behind. David let out a small sigh, his face brighter than Michael had seen it in a while.
"You should take her to see her mother more often." David said. "She seems to be in a very good mood afterwards."
"They had a very pleasant visit." Michael told him. David nodded his head. He turned from the window to look at his very close friend of two years. He stared at him for a moment.
"If you knew something about Josie, you'd tell me, right? You wouldn't keep such vital information from me." David said. Michael didnt even flinch.
"Of course not. If I had overheard or seen anything suspicious, I would let you know." He stated. David nodded his head. Before another word was said, Max walked through the door, not even sparing Michael a look.
"Max, anything?" David asked him as he walked over to his desk and grabbed the gun off his desk, as if though he were expecting it. Michael's right hand twitched, but other than that he made no sign to noticing. Max still wasn't glancing at Michael.
"I followed them, just like you said." Max told him. Michael clenched his fist tight. How could he have been so stupid. He should have realized that David wouldn't have let them go that easily.
"And?" David asked. Michael swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat. This was it, two years he had put into this case and it was going to end like this.
"They went to see her mother, just like they said." Max said, not even twitching at the flat out lie he had just told. Michael felt the tension leave his body, but he didnt react.
"You dont trust me?" Michael glared at David. David had put his gun back down on his desk, and Michael noticed the way his face had seemed to soften.
"Just being cautious. I'm sure you would have done the same." David told him. "I'm relieved to know that I can count on you when it comes to Josie, though. I apologize, for a moment I thought that maybe your allegiance to me had changed. I've never been happier to be wrong." Michael nodded his head. He turned around, gave Max a look, and walked out the door.
