Hey everyone! I'm working on a wrap-up for this story. But I'm not sure how long it's going to take. But for now, please enjoy!!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________Maya winced as she shuffled around on the couch trying to find a comfortable position. The first session of physical therapy proved to be brutal on her shoulder. All the exercises and stretches. Pushing her shoulder the furthest it would go without injuring it further.
Dr. Wells told her that the sessions would get better as time went on. Her shoulder should make a healthy recovery if she works for it and does it the right way. What the right was, Maya wasn't even sure anymore.
"Maya, baby are you listening to me?" Her mother's voice rang in her ear as Maya held up her cell phone to her ear. With a sigh she fell back against the back of the couch defeated as she let her eyes wander back up to the tv, the video of herself talking earlier and making the public apology on the news playing in front of her.
"Yeah mom, I'm listening." She stated. But she wasn't really. Her mind was too far gone into other places for her to be paying attention to the rambling of her mother.
"Maya, Shawn, and I are worried about you. We weren't able to see you for months, only told that you were going on this undercover case that was dangerous. And now that you're back we feel like you're just pushing us away even further."
Maya could hear the concern in Katy Hunter's voice. It was evident. The tone of a worried sick mother who did nothing but waits by the phone for months to hear any news about her only child.
"I've been trying to get back into the hang of things," Maya told her. "It's been... difficult to get back to my regular life since coming home." It wasn't a lie. It really had been strange to step back into her apartment, mend things with Josh and try to live normally again. Of course, things weren't normal. Far from it.
"Are you ever going to tell me what happened, baby girl?" Katy's soft tone asked. There was no accusation or frustration in her voice. Only concern and an overwhelming amount of love. Maya bit back the memory of her five-year-old self curling up in her mother's arms in the late-night storms that would come through their old run-down apartment.
"You saw the apology video." She stated. Katy was quiet. Maya let out another sigh. "Mom, do you really want to hear all about what happened while I was under? All the things that I saw, what I had to do, what I went through?"
Maya didn't have kids, obviously. So she had no way of knowing just exactly how hard this had all been on her mother. But she was sure that in the end, her mom wouldn't want to hear about any of the details. No mother would. She didn't have kids and she was sure she wouldn't want to know if her kid went through any of the things that she had gone through.
"I want to know if you're alright," Katy spoke lowly on the phone.
"I'm fine," Maya replied almost too quickly. "I mean, I'm alive, aren't I? Isn't that enough?" She was almost desperate to end this conversation.
"That's not what I mean, Maya Penelope, and you know it." Their cringe at her middle name was inevitable. Maya watched her television self frown as the questions came from all the different reporters. The memory was too fresh from the back of her mind. It was on mute, and yet she didn't have to hear it to know what questions were being thrown at her at what time.
The front door of the apartment opened and closed with a soft squeak. Maya sighed as she sat up on the couch, being careful with her shoulder. As much as she hated to admit it, the sling helped a lot. Of course, she always knew it would. She just never liked them. But she knew with all her reports from her sessions going to Josh, she wouldn't get away with keeping it off.
