Hey everyone! This chapter gets a little crazy, so hold on tight. I hope you guys enjoy!
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________David was in no mood to be consoled on the way back from the charity event. He was seething, it was almost scary to see how angry he was. To a normal eye, it would look like David was just quietly thinking to himself. But Maya knew, she could see him slightly trembling. It was enough to make her shut her mouth and her keep her hands to herself.
Maya wasn't sure what was going through David's mind. But whatever it was, it made her nervous. Extremely nervous. She wasn't sure what he would do at this point, how violent he might get.
Maya had already made it up in her mind that she didn't care what she had to do to keep this cover up, but she did not have to put up with David's violence towards her. She didn't care what his excuse was, she had seen way to many things in the FBI to allow herself to be put in a situation like that. And seeing David like this, it was enough to make Maya on edge.
Abusive relationships were one thing that Maya never allowed herself to get involved in. She loathed them, like most people do. But if someone seemed like they were even remotely abusive, then she wouldn't even involve herself with that person. That was one of the things she loved about Josh. He had always been so calm and really slow to anger.
Whenever Josh did get physically violent, it was always towards people that hurt her or his family. But Josh was also very old fashioned and for the longest time he had never let her see that side of him. But maya trusted Josh, she knew that he could and would never physically hurt her. Josh would kill anyone who tried to hurt her, she experienced that first hand.
The car stopped abruptly and David didn't even stop to wait for Maya. Instead he got out of the car and slammed the door before it was even parked. Maya got out of the car and noticed that Michaels car was already there.
David had left the front door open, didn't bother to shut it and as Maya walked into the house David was already half way up the stairs. Part of Maya wanted to really bad just walk into her room and stay there. But she knew that wasn't an option. She could tell that David was silently telling her to follow him and not to even dare go anywhere else.
As she climbed up the stairs, she could already hear the yelling that was coming from David's office. It was thunderous. She could hear the sound of breaking glass as he threw things against the wall and onto the floor. His office door was wide opened though, an unusual invitation of uneasy welcome.
"Josie, get in here and shut the door!" David snapped. Maya walked slowly into the room and closed the door behind her. She came to stand in between Max and James, Max was looking extremely uncomfortable and Michael had a stone face on. Simon was also in the room, and that was the other of David's main three. And he was more like Michael with his stone face.
"I have never felt more betrayed in my life." David said as he glared at the four of them from behind his desk. "One of you have went behind my back and went to the Feds?" He asked sarcastically. "I can't even believe this is happening to me!" He called out as he picked up a picture frame on his desk and threw it across the room. Maya jerked a little as glass flew across the room, and Max jumped back startled. "I only told one person that this charity event was going to pay for something, and the feds had been tipped off about that." David spoke quietly this time.
Oh shit.
Maya had forgotten completely about that. She hadn't thought about the fact that she was the only one that David had told about the money and what it was going towards. How could she have forgotten about something like that? And by the twitch in Michaels jaw, so had he.
David was looking right at her with his eyebrows narrowed. There was also a slight twinge of heartbreak in his features as he thought about Maya betraying him. He started out from behind his desk and walked over to where Maya was standing. It looked as if he was conflicted. Killing her or something else.
"It was me." Maya snapped her head over and looked at Michael as if he were crazy. "I was the one that tipped off the feds. Josie told me what was going on in confidence that I wouldn't say anything to anyone else. She thought she could trust me since I was so close to you. It wasn't her fault."
David's attention was focused to Michael as he walked in front of him. It suddenly had become hard to breath. Maya wasn't sure what Michael was trying to prove. He had told her that he wasn't going to take any heat for her, that if something were to happen he wasn't going to go down with her. So why the hell was he taking the blame?
"Don't try and cover for her." David told him. Michael shook his head.
"I'm not. You can even look into if you want. My real name is Michael and I work for a detective agency here in New York. I've been undercover for the last two years. I took advantage of Josie being here. I knew she was getting close to you, so I got close to her so she would trust me and let me know everything that was going on. I became her friend, someone she could talk to." Michael told him, avoiding all eye contact with Maya.
Maya was staring at him in shock. She must have looked a little shaken up, granted she was, because David had taken her look for pure shock and disbelief at what Michael had said. She was in shock and disbelief, but not for the way that David was taking it. Maya couldn't believe that Michael had just outed himself.
"Is this true?" David asked Maya specifically. But Maya couldn't answer, she was way too busy staring at Michael like she had just seen him for the first time. David must have taken that as a good enough answer. Because he nodded his head and walked back over to his desk.
"I must admit, I'm a little relieved that it wasn't Josie." David remarked. "But two years I poured myself into you. You were like my brother, you were family." Then before anyone could say anything, David had pulled out his gun, pointed it at Michael, and shot him.
Maya stumbled back in shock as Michael fell to the floor. His breathing heavy as he brought his hand up to the hole that was now in his chest, barely hanging on to life. David movers over towards him and crouched down beside him so Michael was looking right at him.
"You meant so much to me. You're whole team, I will track them down and find out who you were working for. And those FBI agents that was there tonight. I'm going to kill every single one of them." David told him before he got back up and stared Michael in the eyes.
"Wait-" Maya called out, but the second gunshot rang through her ears as Michels head slumped to the side, laying still as could be.
Max squeezed his eyes shut and ran his hands through his hair. Maya walked forward but Max reached out and put a hand on her arm to keep her from continuing. Maya looked back at him and he slightly shook his head at her.
"Get rid of him." David said. Simon came over and started taking Michaels body and wrapping it up in plastic. Maya looked away and over at David, who was staring right back at her.
"Y-you killed him." Maya told him. "You just killed him." David walked over towards her and grabbed her by the shoulders.
"I had to, Josie. He betrayed me, he betrayed us. I told you when we first started, I can't have people fishing around. I had to get rid of him, Josie. I had to." He told her. "You'll understand one day." He said before letting her shoulders go and turning back towards his desk.
Maya shook her head, she couldn't take it. She turned around and walked past Max and out of the office door. She didn't stop until she was all the way in her room. She locked the door and kicked off her heels. She leaned against the door and was breathing heavy.
Michael was dead.
Michael was dead.
He was dead.
And it was her fault.
