"Alex, Ana, Leo, hopefully you'll never have to watch this, we're so close to being ready to leave this place together and you guys won't ever have to endure what we went through.
By then, I will have deleted these videos and told you everything myself in person.
I honestly don't know why I'm even making these videos.
The possibility that you will find them on your own is like a million to one, we made sure of that, to protect you guys.
I think I'm mostly just making these for myself.
Just to work through these things in my mind.
But anyway, I'm gonna start from the beginning.
I was born an only child in 2464.
I grew up in the very South of the city on the last ship where there was just nothing but ocean as far as you could see.
I used to sit on the edge of the ship as a kid and stare out knowing there wasn't any land beyond there, but it just felt good to imagine there was.
My parents told me to stop doing that because they said it would make me crazy.
They didn't know how to swim and they didn't want me to learn how.
They were afraid if I knew how, I would try to swim out to sea and die drowning like a lot of people who did it because they didn't wanna go on working as slaves their whole lives.
Eventually though, I was able to find a teacher who would teach me without my parents knowing.
I had a friend and her parents taught her how to swim.
So I begged her to ask her parents if they could teach me, and they did.
She was my best friend growing up.
Her name was Adriana.
Leo's Mom.
Ana, I named you after her, but you already know that.
So I would swim around close by the end of the ship where I lived while my parents went off to work.
I even saved a kid from drowning once.
That's why I taught you guys to swim, because not knowing how to swim would be worse.
You can try to avoid falling into the water all you want but, if you do fall in, and there's no one around to save you, you're gonna drown.
It's better to know how so you can save yourself.
My parents caught me swimming and saving the kid from drowning and they yelled at me for it.
I was so mad at them that I tried to argue back at them saying swimming is not a crime and I saved someone.
Swimming wasn't a crime yet.
