MORE THAN THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR HAD PASSED since the time that Amaia told Ana in the cell that she would get back at her.
And in all that time, nothing happened.
Ana started to wonder what Amaia was planning to do.
MEANWHILE, Ana and Alex spent whatever time they had thinking about ways they could escape and get out of their rooms.
None of them could think of something, until one night when Ana noticed something.
Every morning they had to wait for the guards to unlock the room doors with an electronic signal.
They looked at the card key slot on the handle of the door and waited for the light to turn green.
Then the door would unlock and they would be able to get out.
But when they returned to their rooms at night, they did not need to wait.
The doors were already unlocked.
Every night before they turned the lights out, they would hear the guards walking the hallways checking to make sure every door was closed before they left to go to sleep.
Ana noticed that the doors were left unlocked from the outside.
After that realization, Ana immediately began thinking of ways to open the door from the outside.
She thought of using the chain from her locket and putting it through the small crack in the side of the door to hook on the outside door handle, and then pull down on the chain to turn the handle and open the door.
Ana took off her locket and began trying to put it through the small crack in the side of the door.
As Ana fiddled with her chain by the door, the noise woke up her roommates who were trying to sleep.
Maja opened her eyes and sat up looking at the door.
She rubbed her eyes with her right palm and looked over at Ana by the door.
"What are you doing?" whispered Maja.
Ana stopped for a brief second and looked at Maja.
"Nothing, go back to sleep." said Ana and continued to fiddle with her chain.
Maja stood up and went to Ana.
Irina and Lauren both woke up and looked over at them.
Maja noticed that Ana was trying to open the door and said—
—"You're trying to open the door?"
"That's right." said Ana still fiddling with her chain.
Then Maja said—
