DETECTIVE WATERS was in his office looking through all the photos and notes he had compiled about Rafael and Julieta Sánchez; so he could continue his search for the submarine.
As he sat on his desk looking through the notes and photos, he heard a knock on the door.
KNOCK KNOCK.
Waters looked up and saw a Policeman open the door and enter the office.
The Policeman said—
—"Sir, there's been a murder in the South part of the city."
Waters quickly got up from his desk and walked out of his office with the Policeman.
Detective Waters arrived at the building and went inside.
He went down the stairs, across the large main room and down the hallway toward the room where all the policemen were.
Waters saw Mason standing by the door and went up to him.
"What happened?" asked Waters.
"Poisoning."
"Who's the victim?"
"She was a Nurse named Kate."
Waters raised his eyebrows reflexively and was shocked.
"She's inside?" asked Waters.
"Yeah, she's in there." said Mason pointing inside the room.
Waters looked inside the room and saw Kate lying on the floor with her eyes closed and a young girl with red hair kneeling down beside her with her back turned, so Waters wasn't able to see her face.
Waters looked back at Mason and asked—
—"Who's the girl?"
"Her daughter. Hasn't left her side since she got here."
Waters looked perplexed and dumbfounded hearing this.
He felt like the wind had been knocked out of him.
He gulped.
His eyes widened and his mouth opened slightly in astonishment.
He quickly looked back at Lauren in the room and tried to see how old she looked.
"How old is she?" asked Waters to Mason.
"18, I assume. She just got back from her 4 years on the ship."
"What's her name?"
"Dunno, we haven't exactly asked her yet."
Then Mason and Waters walked into the room.
Waters saw the back of Lauren as he walked over to her.
Mason said to Lauren—
—"Dear, could you give us a minute in the room please?"
