Alex and Ana spent the day sitting in their desks at school listening to a Metal Worker that their Teacher brought in to talk to the students about his job.
Their Teacher was required to bring in workers from different occupations in different sectors to let them know about the different types of work that they will eventually have to choose to enter after their 4 years of service on the fishing ships.
After the first part of the Metal Worker's speech, their Teacher gave them a 10 minute break.
Some of the students got out of their desks and stretched their legs around the classroom.
Alex stretched his arms and got up from his desk.
Then Alex noticed that Ana was not sitting in her desk.
He looked around the room and did not see Ana anywhere.
Alex sighed irritated.
He realized that Ana must have left and went home to look in the box for their birthday presents.
He saw Yumi standing by the stairs and went over to her and said—
—"Hey Yumi, have you seen Ana?"
"No. I haven't."
Alex thought that Yumi might be covering for her and said—
—"Are you covering for her?"
"No."
Alex didn't believe her and said—
—"Where is she? Did she sneak out?"
"I don't know." said Yumi with a poker face.
Alex then went over to Leo and said in Italian—
—"Ehi, hai visto nostra sorella?" (Hey, have you seen our sister?)
"No perchè?" (No. Why?)
"Porque creo que se fue a casa a hacer algo estúpido. La voy a buscar." (Cause I think she went home to do something stupid. I'm gonna look for her.)
"¿Quieres que te ayude?" (Do you want me to help?)
"No. Stay here."
Alex then quickly went up the stairs out onto the deck of the ship where the lunch tables were.
He looked straight ahead as far as he could at the far end of the ship looking for Ana, but he didn't see her.
He looked around the deck and ran over to the side of the ship.
He looked down and saw Ana in the water swimming along the side of the ship about 5ft away.
"You've gotta be kidding me." groaned Alex.
He went over to the ladder that went down the side of the ship and started to climb down.
He got to the bottom of the ladder about a foot above the water and called out to Ana in a hushed tone.
