Maja Ivarsson grew up near in the center part of the city with her little brother Kristofer, her cousin Nina, and their families.

Maja and Nina's mothers were sisters and lived next door to each other.

Maja and Nina were born in the same month and were practically like twin sisters.

Unlike Maja's blond hair, Nina had dark black hair.

Maja did not particularly like her little brother Kristofer, because he would follow her and Nina around all the time and would touch all of Maja's stuff and that would really bother her.

Maja would reject him from joining her when she and Nina would go places.

Nina would tell Maja not to be so mean to him and told her that she envied her because she had a brother and she did not.

Nina would constantly ask her parents for a sibling and her parents decided to have another child when Nina was 8 years old.

Nina was really happy when she heard that and was excited awaiting for the day he or she would be born.

Maja thought and told Nina that she was too optimistic about it because she's never actually had to deal with having an annoying little brother.

ONE TIME, Kristofer tore Maja's favorite dress by accident and that made her extremely furious with him and she told him that she hated him and that he was stupid.

That caused Kristofer to run out of the house crying.

When he did not return home that day, everyone began to worry.

They went looking for him and reported him missing.

AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS OF NOT FINDING HIM, a couple of men from the Police came to Maja's house.

One of the men was Captain Gilmour.

He and his men told them that they found Kristofer's body.

They told them that he died in a warehouse fire.

Kristopher's body was so charred and burned that he was barely recognizable.

After they buried his body at sea, Maja blamed herself for what happened and never really recovered from it.

It wasn't until Maja saw Nina's new baby brother that Maja began to not feel so sad and self loathing.

It was like Nina and Nina's parents' happiness was beginning to rub off on Maja.

The emotions of seeing Nina holding her little brother were overwhelming for Maja.

She cried and Nina hugged her.

From that point forward Maja hardened herself because she didn't want to go on living in regret and sadness always crying all the time.

WHEN THE TIME CAME FOR MAJA AND NINA TO GO ON BOARD THE SHIP, they hugged their parents and Nina's little brother Felix and said their goodbyes before leaving toward the docks with their class.

What surprised Maja when she went into her room was that she saw a much younger girl with black hair there.

Maja noticed that the girl was much too young to be on the ship already.

Maja heard from her oldest roommate that the girl was named Irina and had apparently been on the ship for 3 years already since she was 9 years old.

That she was apparently an orphan who caused trouble like a stray cat and was put on the ship as a consequence.

But that was just one of several rumors about Irina.

Another rumor was that she had her tongue cut out and some of her teeth pulled out.

Maja noticed that Irina had lots of scars on her hands and wrists that Maja figured must have been from cuts.

Maja also noticed that Irina had a scar from a burn mark on the back of her neck.

Maja could recognize that it was a burn because of the burn marks she remembered seeing on her little brother.

Irina was only a child, but she looked like she had lived for much longer.

What Irina's true story was, only Irina knew.

SOMETIME AFTER BEING ON BOARD THE SHIP, Maja and Nina saw the guards bringing a guy who was the same age as them on board the ship from another ship.

During work, they saw the new guy fighting and being beat up by some of the older guys.

They watched the older guys tie up the new guy's hands behind his back with rope and then they locked him in a broom closet.

Nina went to help him and Maja tried to tell her to stop because she didn't want to get involved and possibly get in trouble just to help some random guy they didn't even know.

But Maja reluctantly went along with Nina and stood by the door watching to make sure the guards weren't looking their way.

Nina opened the door of the broom closet and took one of her hair clips out of her hair.

Nina retracted a small blade that was concealed in the hair clip and then used it to cut the ropes on the guy's arms.

The Guy thanked Nina and she asked him his name.

The Guy said his name was Rob.

Both Maja and Nina were surprised by his English accent and Nina asked him where he was from and why he was brought on this ship.

Rob told them that he did something and said something to one of the guards and they punished him by moving him to another fishing ship.

Maja told him that he was stupid for doing that and that he was even stupider for continuing to make the same mistake and getting into fights.

Nina told Rob not to mind Maja.

Rob then noticed that Maja and Nina had the same pair of hair clips and asked them where they got them.

Nina told him they belonged to their mothers who were given to them by their mother, Nina and Maja's grandmother.

And their mothers gave them their pair.

Nina asked Rob to keep it a secret and he agreed.

Nina and Rob started becoming closer and closer as they spent more time together.

They got into a relationship and were even talking about and planning on getting married once they had left the ship.

Maja was skeptical about Rob being a good husband for Nina, but over time she began to feel happy for her and even felt a little jealous of their relationship.
