Jan 16th - Prompt: Memory/Memories

----------------

"You good?"

Edmund glanced up, smiling weakly when Peter sat on the sofa beside him, a small frown on his face. "I'm fine." He all but whispered in reply to his older brothers question.

Peter stared at him. "You sure?" He asked. "I've been stood in the doorway for the past two minutes and you looked rather deep in thought."

Edmunds eyes slipped shut, trust Peter to notice everything. "Just thinking is all." He said quietly, shrugging.

"Thinking about what?" Peter asked, sounding interested.

Edmund though didn't like Peter's curiosity, and sighed. "Nothing important." He muttered.

Peter frowned again. "Are you sure?" He asked, knowing he was pushing his brother, but something told him he needed to do just that right now.

Edmund was silent for a long time, before shaking his head. "Just some memories." He breathed eventually.

Peter bit his lip. "About-"

"Yeah..." Edmund sighed. "About Jadis."

Peter sighed too, placing a hand on Edmunds shoulder. "Don't think about it Ed." He said gently.

"It's hard when the memories are always at the forefront of your mind." Edmund muttered bitterly.

"It only happened a month ago." Peter said with a slow nod. "I guess it would be hard to stop thinking about it, I know I still think constantly of Beruna."

Edmund felt Peter's grip tighten when he mentioned the battle, but didn't comment on it. "I guess we both have some rather unpleasant memories." He all but whispered.

Peter nodded. "Memroies which we'd rather forget." He added.

"Too right." Edmund grumbled. "That or turn back time and change everything." He paused for a moment before looking down at the floor. "What I wouldn't give to go back and do it all differently."

Peter stared at him for a few seconds. "I'd change things too." He said. "I wouldn't of been so horrible to you for one thing."

Edmund snorted. "And I wouldn't of betrayed you like the amazing brother I am." He grumbled sarcastically, self hate in his voice which Peter was unable to ignore.

"Ed don't." He told him. "It's over, we can't change the past, as much as we maybe want to. Just concentrate on the present and the future, you know we forgave you, and I'm not having that conversation again, okay?"

Edmund swallowed hard, glancing warily up at his brother before slowly nodding. "Okay." He whispered. "But nothing will stop me from remembering."

"I know it won't." Peter said. "But we can take your mind off them for a while."

"How?"

"A few games of chess ought to do it." Peter said, standing and grabbing the chess board from the table.

"You're offering to play chess?" Edmund said, his eyebrow raised.

"I play chess." Peter said firmly.

"Just not very well." Edmund teased.

"Well practice makes perfect right?" Peter said with a grin, already setting up the board.

"The Queen goes on her own colour." Edmund corrected him when he placed the black Queen on the white square.

Peter chuckled. "See, I've learnt something already." He said. "Come on, give me a few games."

"Alright." Edmund agreed, moving forward a little. "But I'll probably win."

"I know that." Peter grumbled playfully. "But that doesn't mean I can't try."

"True." Edmund said with a smile. "Come on then, you move first."

Peter watched as Edmund smiled his way through the first game, even grinning widely when he won, giving Peter his famous "I told you so" look.

Peter was just happy he wasn't thinking about Jadis anymore, because even though he didn't know everything that had happened, he still knew that some of the stuff was horrific, and he didnt want Edmund remembering something like that, not now, and even if Edmund might sometimes remember, Peter promised himself and his brother that he would always be there for him, no matter what.
