177: Mum's not here

June 26th - Prompt: Keep you safe

"I promised Mum I'd keep you safe!"

Edmund sighed, sitting slowly down on his hammock. "I know you did." He murmured. "But I have to do this."

Peter shook his head. "No, you don't." He snapped. "I am not letting you fight in a battle Ed, you could be killed!"

"But I could live." Edmund argued.

"Ed, I don't wanna scare you but if the witch knew you were fighting in this battle, do you honestly think she'd leave you alone?" Peter asked.

Edmund took a deep breath. "Peter please." He choked, desperation in his voice.

"I have to keep you safe!" Peter cried. "You're injured enough as it is! Goodness knows what could happen if you fight in this battle."

"Peter look, I don't expect you to understand, I mean, how could you?" Edmund sighed. "But I have to do this, and you really can't stop me, you know when I put my mind to something I do it, so what's the point in having this conversation?"

Peter stared at him for ages, before swallowing hard. "I can't lose you." He murmured, shaking his head.

Edmund shook his head too. "You won't." He said firmly. "I promise."

Peter swallowed hard. "I promised Mum." He added.

Edmund nodded slowly, before sighing. "Mum's not here though." He whispered. "It's up to you entirely now Peter, and deep down you know I need to do this... don't you?"

Peter squeezed his eyes shut, but nodded slowly. "Yeah." He choked.

"You can still keep your promise Pete." Edmund sighed. "Because I promise you I'll be fine."

Peter opened his eyes and stared at him for a very long time, before he took a deep breath and nodded slowly. "You better be." He choked. "Or I'll kill you myself."

Edmund just smiled.
