"Mummy?"

Helen's head snapped up and she quickly wiped away her tears, surprised to see her youngest daughter stood in the doorway, in her nightdress and clutching her toy dog in her arms. "Lucy." She breathed. "What are you doing up."

Lucy stared at her for a moment before shrugging. "Couldn't sleep." She murmured, walking slowly over to the sofa and sitting beside her Mum. "Why are you up?" She asked. "It's gone midnight."

Helen sighed. "Didn't feel like going to bed." She said quietly.

Lucy was silent for a moment, before glancing up at her. "Is it because Dad won't be with you?" She asked, voice almost a whisper.

Helen stared back at her before hesitantly nodding. "Yeah." She breathed, wiping away a tear before it ran down her cheek.

Lucy bit her lip. "You miss him?" She murmured.

Helen nodded. "Of course I do." She sighed. "He only left today and I miss him like crazy."

Lucy nodded a little, before tightening her grip on her toy dog. "He'll come back." She said, trying to sound confident. "I know he will."

Helen stared at her for a moment, before chuckling gently. "You're brave aren't you." She said gently. "My little valiant Lucy."

"What does valiant mean?" Lucy questioned, frowning a little.

"It means you have a lot of courage." Her Mum told her. "And you have exactly that."

Lucy smiled a little, before sighing. "I am still worried about him though." She murmured gently.

Helen nodded. "I know." She breathed. "But he - he'll be alright. He said he'd come home didn't he?"

"Yeah..."

"And your father's a man of his word, and he gave us his word, so there's nothing to worry about." Helen said softly. "Now I think it's time you went back to bed, you're looking tired."

Lucy smiled in agreement, slowly standing. "Love you." She murmured as she hugged her Mum goodnight.

Helen smiled, tears in her eyes as she hugged her daughter back. "Love you too."
