The very top of the lookout tower in the center of the Glade; that was your favorite spot to escape to, especially after dark. It was greenie day, and the other boys of the Glade were having their usual rowdy campfire. You didn't like the noise and chaos the campfires brought and, besides, the Creators sent you up a new book in the elevator with the greenie. Picking between quietly reading a new book in your favorite spot undisturbed or a hectic party was an easy choice.
Tonight's book was called Animal Farm and it had entranced you from the first sentence. The farm in the story reminded you of the Glade in a way; a group of creatures working together to survive a harsh world. But as the story and the sky around you grew darker, you found yourself squinting to see in the dim light.
"Need a light?"
You glanced up to see Gally climbing up the ladder, a lantern in hand.
"Thanks. I didn't realize how dark it was getting."
"You've got to be careful. You'll hurt your eyes."
Gally sat next to you and you smiled, your eyes rolling. You never could understand Gally. He was tough as nails to the rest of the Gladers, but for a reason you couldn't figure out, he had a soft spot for you. And Gally's soft spot liked to show itself in overprotectiveness. Every now and then, however, you liked to tease him about it. You felt like trying it tonight.
"Well, if you're so worried about my eyes, why don't you read to me?" You said playfully, offering the paperback book to Gally.
Gally stared at you like you were handing him a bloodstained murder weapon, glancing up suspiciously.
"Seriously?" He reached out and took the book. You nodded and curled yourself in his arms, leaning back to stare up at the stars. You stifled a giggle as you saw Gally's face go beet red.
"You can start back at the beginning if you'd like, I wouldn't mind hearing it again." You mumble, getting distracted by Gally's heartbeat thumping in your ears. It was a nice sound, a sturdy sound... you were suddenly aware of how cold it had gotten outside and how warm Gally was. A gust of wind made you shiver, and Gally pulled you up in his arms.
"Um... well...Chapter one. Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the popholes."
The story went on in Gally's low voice. The campfire died and the other boys went to sleep, but on and on Gally read. You closed your eyes with a contented smile on your face as he made different voices for the characters and got animated as he read the story aloud.
You didn't even realize you had drifted off to sleep until you heard the book clatter to the tower floor and Gally sit up sharply.
"That's the end? No way, come on, y/n, where's the rest?"
His angry tone vanished as he saw you yawn and wipe your eyes.
"Oh, shuck, y/n, were you asleep? I'm sorry... come on, let's climb down."
"It's ok." You grinned.
"What? You already read it? Then why did I-"
"Maybe I wanted to read it with you."
Gally flushed and looked away, and you couldn't keep a giggle back.
"You're adorable when you're embarrassed, you know that?" You teased, poking him.
"Hmm. Go to sleep. You've got work tomorrow." Gally huffed as he offered his hand to help you off the last step of the ladder.
"Aye, Captain! Goodnight."
You grabbed your book and took off to your bedroom, leaving Gally with a mind full of stories staring after you.
