The sun was just beginning to rise over the Glade, casting a soft, golden light across the fields as the runners prepared for another day in the maze. You stood at the edge of the
Homestead, your heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. Today was the day you'd been waiting for — your first day as a runner.
Newt spotted you from across the Glade and made his way over, his usual warm smile on his face. "Morning, love," he greeted you, his voice gentle. "You're up early."You turned to face him, trying to keep your anxiety in check. "Yeah, I guess I'm just... excited. And a little nervous."
Newt's smile widened, and he reached out to squeeze your shoulder reassuringly. "That's to be expected. It's a big day, after all."
You looked down at your feet, shuffling them in the dirt. "Do you really think I'm ready for this, Newt? What if I mess up or... get lost?"
Newt's expression softened, and he moved closer, tilting your chin up so you were looking into his eyes. "You wouldn't be doing this if you weren't ready. You've trained hard, and you've got one of the sharpest minds in the Glade. Minho wouldn't have chosen you if he didn't think you could handle it."
His words were comforting, but you could still feel the knots in your stomach. "I just don't want to let anyone down."
"You won't," Newt said firmly. "We all trust you, and we know you'll do great. And remember, you're not out there alone. Minho's with you, and he's the best there is."
You took a deep breath, nodding as you tried to let his reassurance sink in. "I guess you're right. I've just been looking forward to this for so long, and now that it's here, it's kind of overwhelming."
Newt chuckled softly, brushing a strand of hair out of your face. "That's normal, love. Just take it one step at a time. You've got the skill and the courage, and you're going to make us all proud."
You felt a wave of warmth at his words, and you managed a small smile. "Thanks, Newt. It means a lot to hear that from you."
He smiled back, his eyes full of affection. "Anytime. And just so you know, I'll be right here waiting when you get back. You can tell me all about your first day over a nice meal, alright?"
You nodded, feeling a little more at ease. "Sounds like a plan."
"Good," Newt said, giving your shoulder another squeeze before letting go. "Now, go show that maze what you're made of."
You took another deep breath, feeling a surge of determination as you turned to face the maze. With one last look at Newt, you squared your shoulders and headed towards the runners gathering at the entrance.
As you approached, Minho gave you a nod of approval, and you fell in line with the others, your heart racing with a mix of fear and excitement. The doors of the maze creaked open, revealing the dark, twisting corridors beyond, and for a moment, you hesitated.
But then you remembered Newt's words, his unwavering belief in you, and you felt a newfound sense of strength. You weren't just doing this for yourself — you were doing it for all of them, for everyone in the Glade who trusted you to help find a way out.
With a determined nod, you stepped forward, crossing the threshold into the maze. The world around you seemed to shift, the sounds of the Glade fading as you focused on the path ahead. Minho gave a sharp whistle, signaling the start of the run, and you took off, your feet pounding against the ground as you navigated the twists and turns of the maze.
The hours flew by in a blur of adrenaline and concentration, and before you knew it, you were back at the Glade, breathless but exhilarated. The doors closed behind you with a heavy thud, and you stood there for a moment, catching your breath and processing everything you'd just experienced.
As you made your way back to the Homestead, Newt was waiting for you, just like he'd promised. His face lit up with a proud smile as he saw you approach, and he hurried over to meet you.
"You made it," he said, his voice full of warmth and relief. "How was it?"
You couldn't help but grin, the excitement of the day still buzzing in your veins. "It was... intense. But amazing. I can't believe I actually did it."
Newt laughed, pulling you into a tight hug. "I knew you would. I'm so proud of you, love."
You hugged him back, feeling a rush of gratitude for his unwavering support. "Thanks, Newt. I couldn't have done it without you."
He pulled back just enough to look at you, his eyes shining with pride. "You did this all on your own. But I'll always be here, cheering you on every step of the way."You smiled, feeling a deep sense of contentment as you stood there with Newt, the maze behind you and the future full of possibilities.
