Gally If You Sleep on the Couch

Fighting with Gally happened on pretty much a daily basis. He was stubborn as a mule, never communicated, and would ghost you for no reason. He was also needy and insecure about your relationship. Sometimes you wondered why you stayed with him, but then he would do something adorable and sweet and you'd fall for him again.

You had learned to give him space when you fought. He'd come back after a few hours and act as if nothing happened. So, when you and Gally blew up at each other for something dumb, and he stormed out to work on something, you let him go and sat down on your cot.

"Hey, y/n. How's the new house holding up?" Thomas asked, knocking on the doorframe.

"Oh, hey, Thomas," You mumbled, hastily wiping a tear from the corner of your eye. "It's great. I mean, as great as life in the Safe Haven can be, right?"

Thomas stared at you for a moment.

"Gally just stormed by my house, off to cut wood I'd imagine. That always means he's upset about something. Did you guys fight?"

"Yeah. What else is new," You muttered, still angry.

"Are you ok? You guys seem to be fighting more and more..."

"I know. He's upset about.... Everything... He still blames himself; you know. He still gets nightmares."

"Yeah," Thomas said quietly, "Me too. But you lost people too."

You shrug. "I'm ok."

"Are you?"

That did it. You started sobbing and sunk onto your cot.

"No, Thomas, I'm not. I love Gally, I really do, but sometimes he's impossible to live with! He never talks to me about his feelings, but I'm supposed to know how to help him. He's never there for me, but I'm always supposed to drop what I'm doing and be there for him! I feel like I can't breathe around him without him getting upset-"

"Y/n, that's not good... that's toxic. He's mentally and emotionally abusing-"

"No, no! Thomas don't say that," You protested urgently, "Don't, it's not his fault. It's me, I have to do better-"

"Y/n, y/n, calm down. It's not your fault. Gally's actions aren't your fault. He needs to figure himself out. Ok?"

You buried your head in Thomas's arms, and he held you while you sobbed.

"Why don't you stay on my couch tonight. Ok? It'll give you both some space," Thomas said.

You hesitated. You didn't want to leave Gally, but the thought of some space made you feel so relieved that you agreed.

"Ok, go pack a bag."

You hurried to do so. As you were upstairs, you heard Gally explode back into the house. You turned with your bag and ran downstairs as Gally was confronting Thomas.

"What're you doing here, shank?" Gally demanded.

"Comforting your partner, idiot," Thomas spat back.

You hurried to stand next to Thomas. Gally looked furious and betrayed.

"What, so you're with him now, y/n?" He huffed.

"No, Gally. But I'm staying with him tonight. I think we both need space," You said calmly.

Gally visibly flinched. "So, you don't love me anymore? Is that it?"

"You're hurting them, Gally. Are you really that thick? We get that you're grieving but, huge news flash! We all are! Y/n lost people too. Friends, family. You can't just blow up at them, storm out, and expect y/n to always be waiting for you when you get back."

"Y/n will if they love me!" Gally defended, but you decided to speak up for yourself.

"I do love you, Gally. I always have. But if there's one thing I learned from the maze and the Scorch, it's that you have to look after yourself first... even if you lose people you love. I'll always be here for you, Gally, but I'm not your therapist or your punching bag. I have feelings, too. I have needs, too. And one of those needs is to not constantly be walking around eggshells around you!"

Gally stopped, taken aback. You were as well. In all your fights, you'd never spoken to him that way before.

"Fine. Leave," was all he managed to reply.

You felt the tears spring up again. You had thought, or hoped, that he would put up more of a fight.

Thomas took your arm and led you outside. You stayed with him for a week after that. Gally never once spoke to you. You were heartbroken, but Thomas was there for you. You helped each other grieve. After a week, Minho offered for you to live with him for a while. Thomas enjoyed your company and didn't want you to move out. Minho confessed that he was lonely, so the three of you moved in together. Still nothing from Gally.

Finally, one day, he came to your door with flowers.

"Hey, y/n."

"Gally," You replied, trying to close the door just enough so Gally wouldn't see Minho and Thomas ready to bust his nose if he hurt you again.

"I'm... sorry."

"What was that? I didn't hear you."

"I'm sorry," Gally said louder, thrusting the flowers into your hands.

"And what?" You said, shoving them back. "That's supposed to make this all better?"

"What more do you want for me?" Gally demanded, angry again.

You sighed; what little hope you had draining.

"Look at you, Gally. We've talked for two seconds and you're already mad."

"This is who I am, y/n, why do you want to change me?"

"If this is who you are, then I don't want to be with you!" You shouted and slammed the door in his face.

Minho and Thomas were there to comfort you, but it took a long time for you to move on from Gally. As for Gally, he never really did move on. Just as he didn't move on from Alby's death, or Chuck's, or Winston's, or Newt's. Gally had spent too long hiding his feelings with anger and couldn't put it aside even for a moment.

You didn't get back together. And you were alright with this. You recovered mentally and emotionally, looking after yourself first. You grieved with Thomas and Minho and the three of you lived together for years.

Every once and a while, you would wonder what would have happened if you had taken Gally back. You wondered if you'd made the right decision. But after all, who could say? You did the best you could at the moment, and that was what counted.
