The evening in the Glade was cool and calm, with the remnants of the campfire casting a soft, flickering light over the area. Thomas had been hanging out with some of the other Gladers, sharing stories and enjoying the camaraderie. As the night wore on, the game of cards that had been taking place had dwindled, and many of the Gladers had begun to drift towards their beds.
Thomas found himself alone, sitting on a log near the dying embers of the fire. He was lost in thought when he noticed you walking over, looking a bit tired but smiling warmly. You sat down beside him, close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating from you. It was a subtle, unexpected comfort after the long day.
"Hey, Thomas," you said softly, your voice almost a whisper over the crackling of the fire. "Mind if I join you?"
Thomas looked at you, a bit surprised but pleased. "Of course, y/n. It's nice to have some company."
You leaned into him, resting your head on his shoulder. Thomas was taken aback for a moment but quickly found himself relaxing into the unexpected closeness. The contact was soothing, and the tension from the day seemed to melt away.
"You okay?" Thomas asked gently, noticing the slight weariness in your tone.
"Yeah," you murmured, "just needed a little break. It's nice to be close to someone for a change."
Thomas's heart swelled with a mix of affection and surprise. He had always thought of you as a good friend, but this was a new level of intimacy that he hadn't expected. He shifted slightly to better accommodate you, his arm finding its way around your shoulders.
"I'm glad you're here," Thomas said, his voice soft. "It's really nice."
You sighed contentedly, snuggling closer into him. "Thanks, Thomas. It feels really good to be close to you like this."
Thomas's heartbeat quickened slightly, but he felt a sense of calm wash over him. He had always been a bit wary of showing too much emotion, but with you nestled against him, he felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and trust.
"You know," Thomas said after a moment of silence, "I never thought I'd be on this side of things. Usually, I'm the one who's doing the comforting, not the one being comforted."
You smiled against his shoulder, feeling the warmth of his presence. "You're really good at it, though. It's nice to be able to share that with you."
Thomas chuckled softly, his arm tightening a bit around you. "Well, I guess I'll have to return the favor sometime."
You laughed lightly, the sound a soft, pleasant note in the quiet night. "I'd like that."For a while, neither of you spoke, simply enjoying the shared warmth and quiet. The crackling of the fire and the occasional rustle of the leaves were the only sounds that filled the space between you.
Eventually, Thomas shifted slightly, looking down at you with a warm smile. "You know, I'm really glad we did this. It feels... nice. Different, but nice."
You looked up at him, your eyes reflecting the soft glow of the fire. "Me too, Thomas. Thanks for being here."
Thomas smiled, feeling a deep sense of contentment. "Anytime, y/n. Anytime."
As the night grew darker and the fire continued to die down, the two of you remained nestled together. The closeness was a rare and precious comfort in the Glade, and for that moment, everything felt right.
