You were curled up in the corner of a WCKD holding cell. It wasn't dark like you expected a dungeon to be. The walls were glass. That was worse in many ways. You could see people walking by, off to torture some other innocent teenager. Freedom was so close, but it couldn't be further away.
So, you curled up in the corner of the cell, trying not to look.
You'd been there so long you'd lost track of time. What was time, even? You'd been in the maze, you knew that. But how long ago? Somehow, you'd ended up here. But when? Did the others know you were gone? Others... what others?
Gally.
He was your last lifeline. The memories of him were your only solid ground. Everything else was twisted, distorted by whatever WCKD decided to inject you with. But your memories of him remained untouched.
All the nightmares would end when you thought of him. You felt safe with his memory. It was the only safe thing left.
You thought of him so often that it seemed like he was there. Sometimes the visions were more real than others, and you could almost touch him. You'd talk to him, sometimes knowing that he wasn't there, sometimes not wanting to believe it.
You saw him today, from your place in the corner.
He was running through the hallway by your cell. You watched, curious. Your imagination had never made him do that before.
He skidded to a stop when he saw you. He looked shocked, then worried, then angry. He yelled at you through the glass. But it was too thick, and you couldn't hear him.
You didn't like this imaginary Gally. He looked furious and terrified, pounding on the glass. It was loud for an imagination.
You curled up tighter, closing your eyes, and hoped it would go away and your imagination would make a nice, calm Gally for you to talk to.
You nearly jumped out of your skin as the glass prison around you shattered.
Before you could react, strong arms pulled you to your feet and a loud voice shouted at you.
"Y/n! Y/n, what did they do to you? Are you alright? Y/n!"
You didn't like this dream. It was loud and too real, much too real.
You opened one eye, then the other. It looked like Gally, but a little different. A little more real.
"Gally?" You whispered.
"Yeah, yeah, y/n, I'm here. I'm right here. Are you ok?" He asked urgently.
"I'm tired," You said, as if in a daze. Then it hit you.
"Gally?" You said again, your voice louder, stronger.
"Yes, y/n, we need to go."
"We?" You wondered. "Go?"
"Yeah, we came to get you. Next, Thomas, we're all here. Come on, can you walk?"
"Next, Thomas? They're here?" You were still trying to wrap your mind around what was happening.
"Gally..." You said, your voice so low and desperate that Gally stopped.
"What's wrong?"
"If this is a dream... I don't think I could stand it. I don't think I could fight anymore if I woke up..." You trailed off. Gally's hands tightened on your arms.
"It's not a dream. I came back for you. I'll never let them hurt you again, y/n. But we need to go, ok?"
You followed Gally blindly. You vaguely remembered seeing Thomas and Newt, then Minho. You all got out. But it was only when you were safe at the camp, wrapped in a blanket and Gally's arms, that you realized...
It wasn't a dream.
