The Glade was alive with its usual bustle, boys running around, carrying out their daily tasks, and the distant sounds of the maze echoing faintly. You were walking across the courtyard, dodging a few Gladers hauling supplies, when you spotted Chuck sitting by himself on a log near the edge of the trees. He was holding a half-eaten piece of bread, staring at it more than eating it, his usual energy subdued.

Something about seeing Chuck alone tugged at your heart. You knew how the Glade could be, and though the others treated Chuck well enough, it was easy to see how he could feel left out. He was the youngest in the Glade, and sometimes the older boys didn't take him as seriously.

Taking a deep breath, you made your way over to him, smiling as you approached. "Hey, Chuck."

Chuck looked up, a bit surprised but his face quickly brightened when he saw you. "Hey, Y/n! What's up?"

You sat down beside him, close enough to show you cared but giving him enough space to feel comfortable. "Just thought I'd come over and see how you're doing."

He shrugged, taking another small bite of his bread. "I'm okay. Just hanging out."

There was a brief silence, and you could sense that there was more going on beneath the surface. "You know, Chuck, I've been thinking... this place can be pretty tough sometimes.

And it's easy to feel a bit lost, especially with everyone so focused on their jobs."

Chuck nodded, his expression a bit more serious now. "Yeah. Sometimes it feels like I don't really belong, you know? Like, I'm just in the way."

Your heart ached hearing that, and you decided right then to do something about it. "Well, I've been thinking about that too, and I've decided something. How would you feel about being my best friend?"

Chuck blinked, his eyes widening in surprise. "Really? You want to be my best friend?"

"Absolutely," you said, nodding with a warm smile. "I mean, I could really use a best friend around here, and I think you're pretty awesome. We could hang out, talk, and you know, look out for each other."

Chuck's face lit up like the sun had just come out from behind a cloud. "I'd really like that, Y/n! I've never had a best friend before."

You chuckled softly. "Well, you've got one now. And best friends always have each other's backs, no matter what. So, if you ever feel like you're not fitting in or just want to talk, you can always come to me."

Chuck looked down at the ground for a moment, clearly touched by what you'd said. When he looked back up, his eyes were shining with happiness. "Thanks, Y/n. That means a lot. I promise I'll be the best best friend ever!"

"I don't doubt it for a second, Chuck," you replied, grinning. "And hey, maybe we can start by figuring out what fun stuff we can do around here. We could find a quiet spot to hang out or maybe even explore some places in the Glade we haven't checked out yet."

Chuck's excitement was palpable as he started rattling off ideas, his previous sadness completely forgotten. You couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth spreading through you, knowing that such a simple gesture had made such a big difference for him.

As the two of you began planning your next adventure, you realized that not only had you given Chuck a much-needed friend, but you'd also found someone who could brighten your days in the sometimes grim reality of the Glade.
