Cancer?

I had so many questions yet nothing to say, I stood staring at my phone in total dismay. I wanted nothing to do with the man but I don't wish this on anyone, I really hope this isn't true.

As my brain tries to wrap itself around this heartbreaking news Emma pulls me from my thoughts

"Are you okay? You look a little pale there"

"I'm fine, thanks"

I quickly put my phone to sleep and we head outside dad's house.

The Next Day

I had scheduled a few interviews for the sales associate position at Curls and Care as I have been overly busy and I especially needed to spend more time with Danny now.

Even with their impressive resumes, I wasn't sure if I was ready to leave any responsibility regarding my business to anyone. So I postponed going through more applications and called Mariana to have her help me get in contact with some of Jack's old friends.

1 hour into our conversation and my phone beeps.

Incoming call
Andrew (Ex-Husband)

Not the devil, my subconscious shrieks, and I agree

I haven't spoken to Andrew since the finalization of our messy divorce. He made it clear he wanted nothing to do with me or my family and so I left him and his family alone.

By the time my call was over I had multiple missed calls and a message from him.

Andrew(Ex-Husband)
We need to talk, please pick up, it's important.

I had no idea what he could possibly want from me but to be honest ever since I heard the cancer news he's been on my mind heavily and I figured there was no harm in just having one conversation with him.

Right?

So I answered

SW: Hi, What's up? What's so important?

A: I figured you already heard but I wanted you to hear it from me

......

A: I'm dying. I have stage 4 prostate cancer.

Oh, my f*cking god! So it's really true.

Andrew's confirmation of the news had me stunned, I didn't know how to reply, I had typed a thousand responses but none seemed to fit the situation correctly.

I sat behind the counter of Curls and Care with sweaty palms and overwhelming thoughts.

When my phone rings,

WhatsApp video call from....

him.

I answer it, there's no harm in just talking to him, he's dying it's the least I can do.

Not a minute after accepting the call his well-bearded, smooth melanated face defined by his dark bold round eyes and button nose topped off with pearly white teeth appears.

"Wah gwaan Pooks?" He grinds widely and for a quick second I remembered why I married this man in the first place

Jesus pilot my life!!

Pooks was the nickname he had given to me when me first started dating, it was short for pookie the nickname Dwayne Wayne gave to Whitley Gilbert on our favorite 90s show "It's a different world"

"Mi deh yah " I replied as I tried to stop my cheeks from turning rosy red.

"Mi see that, uh look good eno. Farin life gree wid uh man"
