~chapter fifty-six~

(Y/N) Pov:

I took in a deep breath, concentrating on Onii-chan's movements. He was quick, but I was able to keep up. He was about to attack me, so I tried to use the Eleventh Form, Dead Calm.

With that technique, I managed to block the first few attacks, but I then lost balance, falling backwards. I opened my eyes to see the tip of Onii-chan's sword right in front of me. I let out a nervous chuckle, saying: "I failed again, huh."

He sighed, holding a hand out to me. I gladly took it, letting him pull me back up. Stretching my arms over my head, I yawned, saying: "Okay. One more time." Onii-chan shook his head, saying: "It's already night time."

"Ah, come on! One more try! I'll get it right this time for sure!" I said, looking at him with hope in my eyes. He just shook his head, saying: "That's what you've been saying for the past hour." "W-Well, I'm trying! One more try, please?"

Sighing, he said: "One last try. And this time, keep your stance straight." I nodded, saying: "Will do!" I took my stance, making sure that I wouldn't lose my balance this time. Taking a deep breath, I repeated the whole process of the eleventh form.

"I-I made it!" I called, my eyes almost sparkling at the fact that I managed to block an attack. Onii-chan smiled subtly at me, saying: "You did." I grinned, letting myself fall backwards onto the ground, gazing up at the star-filled sky.

Onii-chan did the same, saying: "You're growing stronger every day." I only smiled, closing my eyes. "I sure hope so. I don't want to lose someone I care for again." I admitted, sighing softly. "That's the way life is." he told me, making me nod. "I know..."

"With every loss, you have the chance to grow even stronger, and you can use that strength for protecting your loved ones." said Onii-chan, making me hum. "I guess you're right." I then closed my eyes, yawning once more. "Goodnight, Onii-chan." "Goodnight, (Y/N)."

Time skip: the next day

3rd Person Pov:

Sitting up quickly, (Y/N)'s hands immediately moved to the side of her hip, where her sword usually was. She didn't find it there, which caused her to panic. "No, no, no. Where is it? Where?!" she asked out loud, quickly climbing out of bed.

Her eyes then landed on her sword, which was sitting on a cupboard. She released a heavy sigh, immediately grabbing it. "(Y/N)?" asked her older brother, slowly opening the door. (Y/N) shook her head slightly, as to get rid of her thoughts.

"Are you okay?" he asked, making her smile, answering: "I am. I just had a bad dream." "Are you sure you're okay?" asked Giyuu, knowing that she never had any kind of nightmares. Nodding, she answered: "Of course. It was just a nightmare. I'm okay now."

"What was it about?" he asked, looking at her with clear worry on his face. (Y/N) looked to the side, answering: "Just that one demon." "Which one?" Sighing, (Y/N) said: "That's too many questions in the morning."

"I wouldn't have to ask if you would tell me." he replied, making her sigh once more, saying: "Fine. That one demon that attacked me at the Rengoku estate. The one that killed my mother and brother."

Now utterly confused, Giyuu noted: "But Sabito and I killed that demon." "No, that was his brother. But... he was the one who told me about my abilities, and why he killed my family. I... I feel like I'll meet him soon, but I really don't want that. He-He scares me." she explained, looking at her sword.

Giyuu, now understanding what she was on about, said: "(Y/N), as long as you're with me, I'll keep you safe, no matter what it takes." Smiling kindly up at him, (Y/N) said: "I know. Thank you, Onii-chan." 

Time skip: four months later

Tanjiro Pov:

Four months have passed since Rengoku-san's death. We obeyed the orders we got from the crows during our breaks in everyday training, and we each went out to defeat demons.

Even when we have to carry out our duties alone, Zenitsu just whines. Inosuke now has more Pig Assaults than ever. (Y/N) has been training especially hard. She was learning the Hinokami Kagura, as well as the Insect Breathing that Shinobu-san taught her. She keeps on saying that she's nowhere near using the Insect Breathing to fight Demons.

As for me, I'm just happy that I'm not alone. All of the training we did together helped us to improve ourselves. And we all grew a lot closer. Right now, I'm getting back from a mission, setting foot on the Butterfly Estate.

"Let us go! I- We're not-!" called Aoi-san, being on someone's back. "My god, just shut up." said the man, clearly annoyed. "Please, stop it!" "Let them go!" called Sumi-san and Kiyo-san, tears in their eyes.

"Ka-Kanao!" yelled Aoi-san, reaching out towards Kanao. Kanao, hesitating a little, got a hold on Aoi-san and Naho-san, who were about to be taken away by that man. "Don't just pull on me so plainly. You have your orders." said the man, turning his head to look at Kanao.

He then yelled: "Just say something, you plain, boring person!" "Charge!" "Chaaarge!" called Sumi-san and Kiyo-san, holding onto the tall man. It was then that I stepped in. "What're you doing to the girls?! Get your hands off them!" I yelled, causing all of them to look at me.

Kiyo-san said: "It's a kidnapping! Save them!" "You dumb little brat!" said the man, to which I charged at him, about to headbutt him. However, the second I was about to hit him, he vanished, causing me to land on the ground rather harshly.

"You fool. I am the 'former Shinobi', Uzui Tengen-sama. The man who is known as the most flamboyant around these parts. Did you think that I would get headbutted by a brat like you?" said the man, glaring at me.

I yelled: "Give Aoi-san and the others back! What're you even planning!" The other two girls kept on yelling at him, too, so he said: "You damn brats! Who do you think you're mouthing off to here?! I have superiority! I'm a Hashira, you jackasses!"

"I don't accept you as a Hashira! Hmph!" I replied, which caused him to snap. "Don't you 'hmph' me! What the hell do you mean you don't accept me?! You lowly brat! Is your brain completely dead?! I need a girl member on the mission, so I'm bringing them along! I don't need Kocho's permission if they're not Tsugokus!"

Kiyo-san yelled: "Naho-chan isn't a Corps Member! She isn't wearing a uniform!" "Don't need her, then." said Uzui, dropping Naho-san. I caught her, yelling: "What're you doing?!" He merely shrugged, saying: "Anyways, I'm taking her on my mission. She may not be useful, but she's still a Corps member regardless."

Aoi-san's eyes widened. I said: "People have their own circumstances, so I would like you to stop poking around insensitively! Let go of Aoi-san!" "Tepid, so tepid. You're a giant mess and plain out tired. The Demon Slayers are just getting weaker and weaker." said Uzui.

I was able to pick up three different scents, which I easily recognized. So, I said: "We'll go in Aoi-san's stead!" With that, Zenitsu landed on Uzui's left, and Inosuke on his right. (Y/N) landed in front of me, saying: "You need a female Corps member? Here I am."

Inosuke pointed at himself, saying: "I was just on my way back, but I got some strength left. I can head out!" Zenitsu, shivering, said: "L-L-L-Let got of Aoi-chan! Even if you're some kinda muscle monster, y-y-you're not t-taking a single step..."

Uzui looked at all of us for a second, then said: "Okay. Ten I'll have you four come with me." He got down from the fence, placing Aoi-san on the ground. "Follow me." he said, and, with a bit of hesitation, we did so.
