Wiping the sweat off my forehead, I looked at the spotless house, a smile on my face. We are getting visitors today, after all. Sensei's already on the way to get them. Well, he actually wants to kill a nearby demon, but they should be around that area by now. I took the cleaning supplies and put them away.
Then, I started cooking, cutting up different vegetables. I hummed to myself while I did so. "I'm happy to see some new faces. Though I wish big brother would be here, too..." I shook my head lightly at my own words. "I'm sure he's working hard right now. So should I."
"S-So did... I... pass the test?" I heard a a voice I didn't recognize. Getting up from the ground, I went to take a quick peek around the corner. "The test has just begun. Follow me up the mountain." said Sensei, his tone stern. Oh, he's serious about this.
I got a short glance on the boy that was with him. He seems like he's around my age. But weren't there supposed to be two people? Siblings? I guess the other person sits in the basket he's carrying. So it's a child? Sensei took the basket and set it down next to me. "Take good care of her." he said, his tone indicating just how serious this all was.
I nodded at Sensei's words, saluting as he left with the boy. Closing the doors, I slowly took a step closer to the basket, trying to hear a sound of it. Nothing. So I opened it, looking inside. In there sat a girl with long, black hair that faded into orange.
I stared at her for a few seconds, while she did the same. She has a muzzle in her mouth? Why? Anyways, if what big brother said is true, then she's not human anymore. A lump formed in my throat as I eyed the sword hanging on the wall. If worse comes to worse...
I slowly asked her: "Are you... a demon?" She hesitated, studying my very being. I put on a smile, saying: "I'm not an enemy! I won't hurt you. You're safe with me, I promise." She slowly nodded, yet didn't quite trust me. I could tell by her expression.
"Are you the demon, or is it your brother?" I asked, trying to break her shell a little. She immediately pointed at herself, so I nodded. Protective, huh? "I see. Well, you're not going to eat me, are you?" I joked, letting my guard down.
She shook her head almost immediately, causing me to giggle. "I was just joking! I know that you wouldn't do that. Your eyes don't look like the ones of a human devouring demon." An image of the Demon that killed my mother and brother flashed through my mind, sending a shiver down my spine.
I tried to get rid of that picture by changing the topic. So, I asked: "What's your name?" However, she only blinked at me. "So I have to guess, huh? Tell me when I got it right, okay? Let's see... Sayaka?" She shook her head. "Hmm... Shiro? May? Aika?" More head shaking.
"Then... Um, we'll just wait until your brother comes back. He'll tell me your name." She nodded once more, humming softly. "I'm (Y/N). Nice to meet you!" I smiled at her, taking note of how her eyes softened. She's feeling safer already!
"Ah, your clothes are damaged. Let me fix them and get you new ones." I noted, having spotted a ripped part in her Haori. Quickly getting up from the ground, I hurried to my room with her in tow.
Before I opened the door to my room, I instructed: "Wait here." I got in and closed the blinds, making sure to keep the sun out so that it couldn't harm her. "It's safe now." I called. She entered my room, looking around for a short while before walking towards me.
I showed her a Kimono, asking: "Is this one good?" She nodded her head, her hair bouncing softly. "Good! You can borrow it for as long as you want. I'll fix your clothes in the meantime." I told her, handing her the clothes.
She started to change, and I took her clothes from her. She put my Kimono on, sitting on my bed while I grabbed thread and needle and began stitching her clothes up. I was humming the lullaby my father always sung to me, peacefully working on the pink Haori.
As I was done, I turned around, only to see her sleeping. Smiling, I gently put my blanket over her, not wanting to wake her up. I neatly folded her clothing and put it near the end of the bed, checking the blinds one last time.
Once I was sure that no sunlight could ever enter my room, I left it, closing the door behind me. With quick steps, I walked towards my brothers' old room. "I bet he wants to sleep in the same room as his sister." I muttered to myself, preparing a futon for the boy to sleep in. I silently set it up in my room, then left again.
I yawned lightly as I went back into the kitchen, continuing where I left off earlier. Soon after, the door slid open, and someone entered. "I'm back." I heard Sensei say. I smiled, walking up to him.
"Where's the girl?" he asked me. I proudly answered: "She's asleep in my bed. Don't worry, I made sure no sunlight can reach her. Oh, and I befriended her!" "How did you- I shouldn't question you." I chuckled, saying: "She's a nice girl. At least she didn't eat me."
Smiling softly, I added: "Not that she would. I can see it in her eyes." "A friendly demon does exist, after all?" asked Sensei, his eyes practically burning into my soul. Shrugging, I answered: "Well, at least she's not like... them." He put a hand on my head, saying: "You seem to judge correctly."
After some time passed, and I was finally done with cooking, the door slid open once more. I looked over immediately, spotting the boy from before. He looked absolutely exhausted, his voice hoarse as he spoke.
"I... am... back..." he said, barely managing to utter those words. I met his gaze, staring into his dark, red eyes for a moment. He tried to regain his breath as Sensei said: "I've recognized your abilities, Tanjiro Kamado."
With that, the boy collapsed, a satisfied look crossing his features before he did so. I quickly got up, walking over to him, checking him for injuries or the likes. "Seems like I'm getting a new training partner, huh?" I said to myself, my eyes basically sparkling at the thought.
