+THIRD+The dance team sits in the locker room as the first half of the basketball game is played. They watch on the TV as the other team's defensive moves. Tyrell and Jay keep themselves open but down away from Midas. That man is known to shake people up on the court, they don't want to be in his way.
He passes the ball to Namjoon who's closer to the net. The guy guarding him plays heavy defense. Knowing that there's a chance he's going to shoot and make it, he's on him.
Namjoon side sweeps and passes the ball to Ty, who lays it up, making it just in time for the halftime buzzer. Hakeem daps him up with a bright smile as they walk to the sidelines. They all shoulder bump and their coaches hand them water bottles.
"Here, take these. Let's get to the locker room, boys. We've got a few minutes to spare before the dance team goes out. The mascot's throwing t shirts before their performance. Let's cool off real quick."
Namjoon looks around for said team to find them standing by the women's locker room. They're all in their home uniforms, their hair has been touched up and styled. They talk amongst themselves going over final choreography as they wait for their time to perform.
The guys say a quick hi to them before heading into their locker room. The girls are given their cue to head to the gym as the final round of shirts are gunned into the crowd of spectators. They stand on the sidelines watching with smiles on their faces. Some of the freshman girls are nervous and express it in their body language.
Malia sees it and isn't sure how she should help. She wants to ebb their worry yet she's nervous about speaking in front of them herself. But she is captain and it's the role that she has to play. Remembering Namjoon's words, she turns to speak to them more as a guidance role than captain. It takes less pressure off of her.
"I know you guys are nervous because of the crowd and it being your first time dancing like this. But I promise that it gets easier after the first time. It gets less nerve wracking and you'll eventually look forward to coming here to perform. They're here to cheer you on, to support you. This is our livelihood as dancers. Get the first time out of the way and everything after is exciting. If nobody else is cheering for you, trust me when I say the basketball team will."
Her friends laugh and agree.
"Hell yeah. Especially Ty and Hakeem." Taija says. "They gonna be tryna learn the moves as we do them. If that doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will."
"They learn our dances?" One of the girls asks and Malia tilts her head as everyone goes 'eehhh'.
"They be trying." She answers after a couple seconds of contemplation. The girls laugh a little and Malia takes that as an accomplishment. She got them to loosen up amour toe and that was the goal.
The cue is given for them to go to their places. It's time for their performance. Malia gives the girls bright smiles and thumbs up as they head to the court. They get in their formation and the cheers drown out for her as the music starts.
She focused on her form and fluidity, her expressions and transitions. Malia does counts in her head as the music plays on. She smiles at the freshman girls as she spins out for reassurance. One of them take her place in center with Taija and Camryn cheers them on with facial expressions.
By the end of their routine, they're breathing heavy and they stand in formation. The music fades out and the crowd cheers loudly. The team is escorted off the court to make way for the continuation of the basketball game.
Namjoon makes eye contact with Malia on his way onto the sidelines. He blows her a kiss and she cheeses at him. She draws a heart with her pointer fingers and he blushes as he looks away. Hakeem nudges him as he laughs. They huddle up and go over plays for the second half.
