"Finish strong, ladies! I know I've been out but it hasn't been that damn long. Keep it together. You freshman girls up front, I don't know what the hell you've been doing. But I know Coach Tammy didn't teach you that mess." Coach Netta shouts to everyone as we dance.
"You are dancers for a university. You don't work for a nightclub. This isn't about being sexy, this is about form and technique."
"But Coach Raeya said that-." A freshman starts and Coach Netta looks at her as she paces the floor in front of us.
"I don't give a damn what that woman said. Is this her team?"
"No, Coach."
"Is she your Captain?"
"No, Coach."
"So tell me again why the hell I should care about about what she said?"
The room goes silent as the freshman girls look to the floor. We finish the choreography and Coach Tammy claps for us.
"Good job, ladies. Get back to the dorms, get some good sleep. Bus leaves in the morning at 6:15 sharp."
With that, we're dismissed. We put on our clothes and coats and start heading out of the doors.
"Lia!" Cam calls my name and I look back at her as she and my friends jog toward me.
"You okay?" She asks. "You seem kind of down today."
"I'm good." I tell her. "Just got a lot going on. There's a lot on my mind right now."
"Have you talked to Joon?"
"I talked to him. We're still broken up."
"Mm." She hums and Janae nods.
She's been so quiet today that I almost forgot she was here. Our coaches let her sit in the practice like they always do. She sat silently today. Watching, head nodding and looking at her phone every now and then.
We walk in the direction of the parking lot and their dorms and the mood begins to feel heavy.
"What about Yoongi?" Cam asks in a much lighter tone.
I'm grateful for her and Janae. Always. They love Joon like a brother but they still love me as a person separate from him. They know that we're still our own people. Though they may be a little sad that we're not together, they're not forcing it down my throat, either.
"I like him." I tell her as I shrug. "He's cool."
"You probably couldn't see him on the break, though. You guys were out of state."
"Mmm." I tilt my head and she raises an eyebrow. "I saw him when we got back. We only stayed at the resort until the day after New Years."
"Was it like a date? Did you have fun?" Janae asks me.
"Uhhh, we just went out to eat and then to see a movie. He drove all the way to me and then wanted to pay for everything." I roll my eyes.
I don't know why he's like this.
"Ohhh, but that's so cute." Cam pokes her lips out in a pout.
It is. The way that he gets kind of sulky when I tell him I'll split the bill. The way he passive aggressively blank stares at me while he puts his portion of the money up.
The way he finds something new to make up for me paying each time.
"If we split the bill for movies and snacks, I owe you another outing. Matter of fact, we're going to start doing things that don't cost money."
