A lot of people claim that jealousy is an ugly trait, the ugliest trait. And while I used to agree with them, I'm starting to think that's maybe it's circumstantial. Very circumstantial.
Like 'only applies while you're watching your girlfriend smile and talk with a guy you've never seen before in your life' circumstantial.
"Aye." I smack Hakeem's arm. "Who is that?" I nod my head in the direction and he whips his head up to look.
Sitting at a library table by the non-fiction literature section is Malia and the dark haired guy. She's pointing to something on his laptop, moving her hands in the way that she does when she's explaining something. I don't know what the hell is funny about junior year academics but okay.
"Dude sitting with Lia?" Hakeem asks rhetorically. He finishes speaking, knowing my answer to his question already. "He's a senior robotics major. Name's Yoongi. His team won the Vex-U Nationals the last two years. He's a transfer student. Started last year. You didn't hear about that whole situation?"
"No. I don't know any damn robotics majors."
"You don't have to. Half the campus doesn't but they knew about him." Hakeem says as he transfers notes from his notebook to his laptop.
"He won Vex-U for his old school and then transferred here right after. At the beginning of last school year, his old team was pissed. His coach tried to get him discredited and everything. They hate us, apparently. Whole school can't stand us. I just assume we whooped they ass in everything there is to whoop ass in." Hakeem states nonchalantly.
"Anyway, he came here and won first place for regionals and nationals. That put us at the top spot for robotics regionally and third nationally. We used to be at fourth and six."
I want to be impressed. Believe me, I do. But what the fuck is a robotics student doing in Malia's face? Would they even share any of the classes? The hell could she possibly be helping him with?
"Yeah, cool. He's a tech guy. That doesn't explain why he's in Malia's face."
Hakeem blinks at me then slides his eyes over to Malia and Yoongi. His eyebrows twitch before he looks back at me.
"...they're probably studying together. Malia takes advanced classes. She takes them with a bunch of seniors." He speaks slowly. "What other reason would he have-... They don't know each other, Joon."
"Exactly."
Hakeem sighs and looks at me. "You serious right now?"
"Yes. I don't fucking know him. And I don't trust her judgement on people. She's too fuckin nice. How many times does this need to be said and proven for her to get it?"
"It's just who she is, Joon. She's figuring it out. She can't be mean to everybody because of what others did, and you know that she's not going to."
"She don't gotta offer to help everybody with their shit either, though." I stand up from the table with my bag and Hakeem puts his stuff away and does the same.
"Don't do no stupid shit." He whisper yells. I give him a look as I glance back at him. He rolls his eyes and sighs as he follows behind me.
Yoongi sees me coming first and turns his head to look at me completely. He nods his chin in my direction and Malia looks over. Her smile falters the smallest amount and that irks me more. I know she sees the look on my face.
"Thought you had a fifth block today?" I ask as I get over there.
"I did. I mean, do. I'm just catching Yoongi up."
