Goodbye

- "they, they send us back to the United States"

Carina did not react. It was as if her soul had left her body. She had stopped stroking Maya's hair. Her eyes were frozen in the void.

Maya stood up and saw the lifeless look on the face of the woman she loved.
In reality, Carina had heard her very well. It was her body's way of taking the stabbing blow that life was inflicting on her.

The images of the last fourteen months were flashing before her eyes. Maya looked at Carina's still staring face, whose tears had started to flow even though she didn't seem to be inside anymore.

Until her memories came to today, five minutes ago. And that she inflicted a second stab wound by hearing Maya again and again: "they, they send us back to the United States". That phrase echoed over and over. Her cheeks were now flooded.

Maya wiped Carina's tears with her two thumbs.

- "Carina, my love, did you, did you, hear?"

Carina came out of her trance and looked into the eyes of the woman she loved.

- "why?!"

- "my, my, father is going to be promoted to Captain. And he had made a wish to return to the States."

- "When?"

-"When what? When did he make that request? when they send you away?"

- "Sunday"

- "but no, but it's Thursday, but you, you, go to class here, you..."

- "I have to start on Tuesday in my ... Over there"

Both young women were in tears. Obviously they had already talked about the fact that they could be sent to another base. But here they were not going to another base, they were going to another continent.

- "where?"

- "ironically? In Arizona, the Luke Air Force in Glendale."

- "we will have a 9 hour difference" she says dejectedly.

- "fortunately they don't send us to Hawaii, there are 12 of them"

- "Maya..." she said, looking into her eyes. "What about us?"

Maya didn't know what was going to happen to their relationship - it's not like they could see each other every weekend.

She didn't have the answer to that question. So she did the only thing she knew at the time.

-"I love you Carina" she said before kissing her.

They had never exchanged a kiss like that one. It was filled with sadness. They could feel their grief through their lips, through their tongues. Teary eyes. They were both holding each other's faces.

Out of breath Maya broke the kiss: "I don't want to leave you" she said causing another crying fit.

Carina in the same state took her in his arms for an embrace so strong that they could have made only one.

-"You are the love of my life Maya Bishop. I love you. And I promise you that neither distance nor time difference can make me forget that. I will come to you or you will come to me."

- "I was, on, on, the waiting list, but, my dad, passing Cap-captain, I'm going back to military school, I, Tuesday, I'll be officially military in training."

- "no, no Maya, don't tell me that, you can't risk your life, you, you,..."

- "I didn't know you when I proposed to my dad, he thought he was making me happy. And I always wanted to be in the military but, I have you and... It scares me, I could, die and..."
