The recovery

Maya's return appointment had finally arrived. For the past six weeks, she had appointments at Michelle's office three to four times a week.
Carina had made a point of accompanying her to see Dr. Kim.

- "Maya, Carina, how are you?"

- "Well, how about you, Nico?"

- " well thank you, go ahead and enter "

- "I beg you Nico, tell me that I can go back to work"

- "did you do your radio before coming?"

Maya handed the doctor the folder of her tests.

- "ummm, ummm"

- "is it a thing of people in this hospital to say or respond just 'ummm'?"

- "How so?" he asked.

- "no nothing, sorry, tell me"

Maya thought back to the time when Carina stared at her in the kitchen. The Italian woman had understood the reference.

- "ok well before I give my verdict I'm going to check you out. Take off your shirt".

- "Do you need help Bambina?"

- "no, it's okay, don't worry"

Nico examined her, exercised her and manipulated her.

- "well ok, you can get dressed." he said, washing his hands before returning to his seat. "So already, good reaction when Carina asked you if you wanted her help, you did well to refuse otherwise it would have been a no go for the recovery. Then good X-ray and MRI exam. Good mobility, you didn't wince too much. You must have a good physio" which made Carina cringe. "I don't see any problem with you going back to work. I would still advise you to continue with the physical therapy, to start slowly. And to start doing weight training again, but not push-ups, not yet.

-"ok" Maya was relieved and you could see it on her face. Carina was less so. She liked to sleep with Maya every night and especially not to have a girlfriend who put her life in danger.

- "so when can she return to the field?" asked the beautiful brunette

- "as of tomorrow, I don't see any problem"

- "great!" Maya replied

They had left the office, in the elevator Carina was very quiet.  On the way home she was also silent. When they arrived home, Andy was not at home, so Maya asked her :

- "Are you okay, love?"

- "yes yes"

- "Carina, Ti conosco, dimmi che cos'è?" [I know you, tell me what is it?]

-"Mi sono abituato a dormire con te ogni notte e a vederti ogni giorno .I'll miss you, I've been used to it for more than three months" [I got used to sleeping with you every night and seeing you every day].

- "ooooh my love" she said as she approached Carina and placed her hands on her waist. "I'm going to miss you too, baby, but we knew it wasn't going to last forever.

Carina had tears in her eyes.

- "and then... I'm afraid"

- "what are you afraid of?"

- "Maya you almost died, I'm scared, you run into burning buildings when everyone else is coming out. You run into buildings that are about to collapse and you can get stuck. You have to figure out how to get out of a sealed room that's over 40 degrees..."

- "My love, you know it's not just situations like that. Sometimes they are calmer situations".

- "yes, but not primarily. I'd like you to be a Captain, so you'd still be a hot firefighter but with less risk."
