The past

The next morning Carina struggled to get Sarah's number off her hand.
By 8:30 she was at the hospital. Maya was coming in at 9:30 for breakfast with her, Addison and Taryn.

Bambina: I'll be there in 5 minutes.

So Carina had gone down to the cafeteria and sent a message to her friends.

- "my love" said Maya as she saw her

- "I missed you Bambina" she said, putting her two hands on her cheeks to kiss her.

As Maya removed her hands, she noticed a redness on Carina's hand.

- "what's that?"

- "oh it's nothing"

- "it's not nothing it looks like you've been rubbed with blood."

- "you should go and see if it's an allergy or something, you're in a hospital"

- "but no Bambina don't worry like that"

An image of their call that night came back to Maya's mind.

- "Did someone write their phone number on your hand?" She asked, inquisitively, as their friends arrived.

- "Can we talk about this later, please? When I get home?"

- "Should I be worried?" She said suspiciously

Carina took a second too long to answer.

- "non Bambina"

- "How is my favorite firefighter?" Addison asked as she took Maya in her arms.

- "you mean how is the hottest firefighter in town?!" Taryn surmised. "Or in the country..." She added more to herself than to the audience

-"I'm fine, thank you, and you? And Heather?" she asked, raising an eyebrow at Helm

- "I'm doing great!" Fit Addison

- "Heather perfect, and I'm a lot better since I see you in your uniform" she said with a laugh

- "Heyyyy you have your girlfriend, leave my fiancée alone" laughed Carina

- "well Maya it's not that I don't think you're hot but I really need a coffee, like right now. So if we can go order..." asked Addison.

- "I agree with you!" Said Maya

- "prendi un caffè mentre vai a dormire?" [are you going to have a coffee while you go to sleep?]

she looked at Carina's hand: "I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep. Or feel like it."

Carina did not answer. She knew that tonight's conversation was not going to be a happy one.

- "so how was your night?" Carina asked, intertwining her fingers with Maya's, after ordering and taking a table.

- "good, little interventions here and there. But it felt really good to be back where I belong."

This reflection had stung Carina a little. As if Maya didn't belong with her, during these three months. She had indeed said it, yes and no, to sting Carina. She was not convinced that it was 'nothing' that mark on her hand.

- "I'm happy for you Bambina if you are happy that's all I care about"

Both doctors had felt the tension, probably due to the events of the previous day.

They tried to change the subject.

About twenty minutes later, the three women had to get back to work. Addison and Taryn had said goodbye to Maya and Carina had warned them to go ahead, that she would catch up.
