The next morning, Arizona and Callie had prepared breakfast to thank them for inviting them.
Everyone was awakened by the smell of pancakes and churros in the Airbnb.
By 11:30 everyone had arrived, even Jackson had returned from the base in Lajes in the Azores archipelago in Portugal where he had moved a year ago.
Carina and Andrea's parents had come for the meal.
Dean and Jack had volunteered to prepare the barbecue.
By 1:00 p.m., the big table had settled and they were having lunch. The mood was light, as if Maya's departure was not weighing on their minds. Today it was not about her but about the two young people who were celebrating their eighteenth birthday.
Everyone was laughing, they were each telling their best memories of the twins.
Jackson had told the story of how he had been hitting on Carina for months, which made everyone laugh. Arizona even pointed out that he had hit on her while they were together. This made Maya laugh, but she did not want to undermine her morale before leaving. Besides, that story was in the past.
Dean told the story of the time he threw the ball into Carina's head because she was too worried about Maya and Arizona talking, and that it had earned her a black eye for two weeks. Maya made a point of saying that she was still beautiful even with an eye that had gone through every color of the rainbow.
Jack said he asked Andrea if he wanted to date the pretty Carina in their class before he knew they were twins.
Travis, on the other hand, had talked about how Carina was on the verge of imploding before her third date with the beautiful blonde. Carina had given him the stink eye, her parents not being obliged to know that.
Alex had told how Andréa had fallen in love with Sam, that he looked at her from afar and that it had taken him several days to succeed in talking to her. Sam tenderised caressed her cheek: "my baby of love".
All had been of their little story.
Around 3 pm, the twins blew out the candles of their eighteenth birthday, there was a raspberry and a praline cake, the cakes were delicious and beautiful, they had been made in their favorite pastry shop.
They then opened their gifts. Their parent had paid for their driver's license, the hardest part was getting it.
Sam had given Andrea a two-day trip to Disneyland Paris.
They had received several gifts, perfume, personalized gifts, a parachute jump each, among other presents. They had been spoiled.Maya wanted to give Carina her last gift.
She had a star named after her, a deluxe pack with lots of goodies on the star including a painting and a necklace. In addition, she had offered a four-day stay in Los Angeles with two days at Universal Studio Anaheim in December, for when Carina came to the United States for the Christmas vacations.
Carina could never get used to Maya's generosity. She was embarrassed but so happy. They were conflicting feelings, but she felt them both equally.Around 4pm the parents of the twins had left leaving the youngsters to have a pool party.
Music was blaring throughout the house. Kids were screaming, having fun in and around the pool.
Maya and Callie were on the deckchairs and they were talking.
- "Doesn't it feel strange to be at your girlfriend's exe's birthday party?" Maya asked Callie
- "no, it's okay, I got used to them staying friends, I had a hard time at first though"
- "and so do I" she said with an embarrassed laugh.
