Chapter six
Vis had barely had time to sit down for a few minutes after Yara had finished helping her before there was a knock at the door. Yara walked over quickly and opened the door.
"Your grace," She said, opening the door further. Vis stood up quickly, expecting Aemond or the queen, or even the queen mother, to walk in. She wasn't that fortunate. In through the door entered the king, and Vis let out a heavy but quiet sigh in frustration. Aegon stopped just a few steps into the room.
"Wow, you clean up nicely." He chuckled, stepping closer to Vis.
"Come now, cousin. Dinner is ready."
Vis stepped towards Aegon and grabbed his arm that he offered, following him out."Good luck, my lady!" Yara waved, smiling as Vis disappeared out of her chambers.
"Just a heads up. My mother is gonna be shocked when she sees you. She is for sure gonna demand your new dresses made instantly." Aegon said jokingly as he guided them through the corridor.
"What's wrong with the one I'm wearing? It is your wife's, you know." Vis added.
"Yeah, well, it looks better on you. But my mother is very old-fashioned. She covers her whole body toe to the top."
Vis just shrugs, scrunching her nose."I quite like it. I'm originally a Borron. Remember your grace?"
Aegon shrugs in agreement.
"True, you are famous for your high splits and open backs on warm summer evenings." He keeps going as they now take left and into a new corridor.
"Do insist on that style, please? All the girls in the keep are so proper. A breath of fresh air will do them all good." Vis rolls her eyes, knowing exactly why he would insist on revealing clothing.
But she couldn't say no as he was the king, and she also kind of agreed with him. Not that she would ever admit it.
Aegon leads them both towards an open door and through it. Vis looks up first. The ceilings are high, and the chandeliers are great and full of light.
Her eyes travel to the walls. The artwork hanging on them are unforgettable. The first person walking over to her is Heleana. She kisses Vis on the cheek.
"You look splendid, cousin." She whispers, pulling back from the cheek peck. The next person to step up is Alicent.
"Very much, hun. That color suits you well." She says, almost forcing a smile. Vis let's her eyes wander to see more of the room, and at the end of the table is the one missing from her welcome commity.
Aemond has already seated himself. Their gaze meets for a short moment, and Vis sees the small pouty smirk plastered on his face. She pulls her gaze back as Heleana grabs her hand and guides her over to the side of the table. She pulls out the chair that is on the right of Aemond.
Vis stands in front of it as Heleana takes her place beside her. Everybody but Aemond is standing, waiting for the King to sit down first. Aegon doesn't seem to mind that his brother doesn't follow regular protocol. The second Aegon sits, so does the rest, Vis following along.
The food gets brought to the table quickly, and the whole room fills with all kinds of smells. On the plates being put in front of her, there is fish, roast, potatoes, turnips, carrots, and even Brussel sprouts.
The servants pour their cups, and Vis waste no time grabbing hers to take a sip. She stops, however, when the room turns silent. She was the first to start. She presses her lips together, biting her tongue slightly.
