CHAPTER FIFTEEN
By the time the dinner had been served and everybody had made sure to fill their plates, Vis had already been gone in her own thoughts for quite some time. The things flowing around in her head are questions about the war, about who really was responsible for them winning it.
If Aemond really had had any participation in burning half of his family alive or not, especially bothered Vis. She knew it wouldn't change her feelings towards Aemond, but nevertheless, she wanted to hear the whole truth about it.
When the war that only lasted for a week was over, the common folk had been told that King Aegon on Sunfyre had managed to burn the fleet of the Blacks.
The fleet had carried the whole family but her uncle Daemon, even the children. When Vis first heard about it, she had felt unwell as the innocent lives of children were not a part of the war.
She also knew that the war had started because one of the Greens had accidentally killed Princess Rheanyra's second oldest son, Prince Luceryus Velaryon. The common folk had made up their own versions of it, and the biggest rumor was that Alicent herself had claimed the dragon Cannibal and had Luceryus and his dragon Arrax killed during a storm.
Vis didn't know what to believe there and then, but she was certain now that Alicent had never ever ridden a dragon.
The Cannibal was a legend from the skies. It was a male dragon who was said to enjoy eating other smaller dragons, among as well as eating people. He had never been claimed, even though many had tried and died doing so.
Aemond had kept his hand and fingers interlocked with his lover for the whole meal. He had stayed silent when he noticed that his betrothed was lost in her own thoughts.
Vis had barely been able to touch her food, even though what she had already managed to eat was very delicious.
There were a few people who had tried to ingage in small talk with her. Vis had answered shortly and given the impression that she was not as chatty as the rest of them.Vis was ripped out of her own thoughts when she felt a warm breath against her ear.
"You okay there, my love?" Aemond had whispered in her ear.
Vis had just nodded, not given a vocal answer. Aemond found it sad that his betrothed wasn't able to enjoy herself.
It was the dinner of their engagement announcement, after all, and she had gotten dressed up and changed from the pretty girl he was now falling for and turning into a woman of the finest arts."What's on your mind, Vis?" Aemond had whispered again, tightening his grasp on her hand.
Vis was not thinking of the war anymore. Now, a new worry had entered her mind. Gida Tyrell couldn't have been the only one who was suggested to marry him. Or had he suggested it? She knew that there was a small chance that someone much better could show up at any time, and she wouldn't stand a chance.
It made her feel weak. It made her feel like she maybe didn't deserve him as there was probably someone fairer and lovelier than her in all seven kingdoms. What if when they had gotten married, Aemond would end up growing tired of her and find someone else to spend his time with?
Aemond had observed his lover all night, not wanting to interfere with her thoughts. But now he could tell that she was not doing so well. The smile he enjoyed seeing in her lovely face hadn't been spotted throughout the whole dinner. The hand he had held for all of it was shaking, and her free hand had her fingers picking on each other.
"Maybe we should just get you to bed?" He was still whispering to her.
Vis finally broke out of her own thoughts when the chair next to her had been moved. She looked over to the side and saw the King sit down next to her.
She could feel Aemond letting go of her hand and placing it on top of her thigh.
