CHAPTER TWENTYEIGHT
The lift up into the air on Vermax' back was almost the death of Vis. He had ascended steeply, and Vis had been forced almost laying over Vermax' back on the way up to a leveling height.
When Vermax manages to reach that height, however, Vis found riding without the saddle so much easier. Of course, she didn't know how to steer him bareback, but she didn't care.
They were very soon joined in the sky by Aemond. He had all the time up until he spotted her still holding on to Vermax' back, and I felt that it could not be this easy for her to handle all these dragons. Not only had she befriended his dragon.
She had rode into battle with Aegons dragon, and now she was on the back of his nephews old one. In the air, she looked like she had been doing it her whole life. At one point, she even sat up straight, completely letting go of the grip around the spikes on Vermax's body, and lifted her arms in the air.
Aemond had thought her completely insane there and then, but it looked so freeing that he decided to join in, only for a moment, though. Flying over the narrow sea all the time, they did not turn around to head back to the island. If she so easily could claim Vermax, she damn well deserved to keep that claim.
It was already past mid day when Vermax landed himself down onto the grasslands in the capital. When she, after a minute or two, were joined by Aemond and Vhagar, he had reminded her that Vermax had to stay in the dragonpit.
Vis had responded with a simple 'no' followed by a chuckle before dismounting Vermax and climbing down his wing.
"Aegon isn't gonna like that!" Aemond had yelled over to his love that now was on the ground ready, walking over to Vermax' head, letting her hand run along his light green scales.
"I don't give a shit of what Aegon likes or not." Vis had simply responded, something she knew wasn't the best answer, but she was certainly not gonna yield when it came to her dragon.
Vermax was not even close to the size of Sunfyre, but Vis knows that the size of her dragon has nothing to do with how their bond will be. In fact, she quite enjoyed being able to feel like she was really flying, and it helped her gain more control over her body when riding without a saddle.
"You should at least have his saddle installed, Vis." Aemond reminds her as he tries to approach them from the ground. Vermax is quick to come to his new riders aid and snakes his head in front of his rider to protect her. Aemond, clearly intimidated by the dragon, steps back to where he came from. Vis chuckles slightly as she turns towards her dragon.
"Lykiri, Vermax." She says before patting his head one last time.

After freeing their dragons for the day, the pair made their way walking back to the dragon pit. On their way, Aemond stays silent. His mind mostly contains the thoughts of how amazing his love is for having so quickly and successfully ridden three dragons in two days.
Even though she hasn't ridden Vhagar alone, that still counts. Vis is starting to feel the effect of the day on her wounded feet, now walking much slower from the pain.
"Tomorrow, promise me you'll rest?" Aemond asks as they step their last steps up the long stairs.
"I promise, my prince." Vis says as a giggle leaves her lips after she courtsies towards him. Aemond laughs with her, nudging his shoulder into hers before he grabs her waist to aid support to take some of her own weight to ease the pain he knows she is in.
