CHAPTER THIRTYEIGHT

Vis is honestly very tired from the whole situation she has been thrown into. But she feels like she has to stick to their conversation to be polite, even though she really wants to just nap. Their talk earlier in the bath as well as the bath itself had tired her out.

Aegon has noticed that she has gone from answering him in full sentences and to only giving short words as answers.

When there is a natural pause in their conversation, Aegon turns his head to see her lay there with his eyes closed. He knows staying when she is sleeping is completely inappropriate, but it is very hard to keep his eyes off of her.

Even though she is lying there very much pregnant with his brother's child, it still makes him feel good. He knows that even though she had fallen asleep next to him last night while riding, that really didn't count as she was not there by choice.

But now she is showing him how much she trusts him by actually allowing herself to fall asleep. Or, maybe she is just exceptionally tired and has no control over when she falls asleep or not.

But no matter how much they get along and how nice she is, he will never truly know if it is genuine or not as long as she is held there against her will. And he wants her to stay. In fact, he would prefer it if she figured it all out herself.

He reaches for the book that is laying in between them, seeing it as a book with a story of the high lady who back in Old Valeriya been very busy learning the children their language when all hell broke out and the Doom was upon them.

While he reads, he is interrupted by the door opening, and one of the guards is requesting him to come to Helaenas chambers as she is in distress. He reaches his hand over to nudge his cousin slightly, telling her that he'll be back later. She doesn't respond to him anyway, so there is really no bother to try and wake her.

When exiting the chamber, this time, he doesn't lock the door behind him. Instead, he trusts that if she needs to leave, she will show loyalty and tell his guards.

Aegon is quickly making his way up to the chamber him and Helaena had been gifted the day they got married. He has never slept in her bed beside his wife other than a few occasions when she had been ill, and he had felt bad for her and wanted to make sure she was fine.

It strikes him as he makes his way to their chamber that he, his sister, Vis, and Aemond are the last Targaryens left on in the whole Realm. No, never mind.

He quickly is reminded of his uncle in the dungeon and his father's cousin Rhaenys, who lives at driftmark. But between the six left Targaryens, there are only he, Helaena, Vis, and Aemond, who is young enough to keep the blood line going. His plan of keeping the woman he loves away from the man she loves and is having a child with is getting more and more stupid by the second.

He pushes away his thoughts when he enters Helaenas chambers and sees his wife in such clear distress. She is obviously having another lucid dragon dream, and Aegon finds himself needing to provide his wife just the same amount of comfort as he provides the girl he so clearly loves.

It's not that he and Helaena hadn't tried to become parents. The night of their wedding, their mother had forced them to consumate their marriage, and even though a healthy Targaryen child would be the heir, no child of his would ever be forced like he was. But when Heleana failed to fall pregnant upon their marriage consumation, she also refused to let him back into her bed after that.

Their marriage was incredibly complicated. Helaena thought her husband was useless and weak. Though that was only something she dared to say only to him. They never developed a husband and wife relationship, as Aegon struggled to see beyond the fact that she was his sister.
