Jacob and I didn't speak for the next couple of days after that. I decided not to talk about it with anyone as if that would make it all go away. It was difficult to talk or face Nathan and Gray during the video calls but I somehow managed to hide my emotions and the urge to ask them about the incident that orphaned us more than a decade ago.I went to office as usual and did whatever task they asked me to but it was suffocating.
All I could think of was if the people around me were all in cahoots with Jacob to surveil me or were there some who were just a part of this firm oblivious to the scam Jacob had created to trap me. I didn't even want to start thinking of how he's managing to make this all work.
Did he forge their identites? Is it easy to do so in smaller towns? Or is it because of the connections he gained from his father's gang business?
Wait now that I think about it, he did say his dad belonged to some old gang family.
Wait did mom know about it?
No more importantly did they know each other?
How? I have so many questions.
"Earth to Vivylyn." Hazel called out to me while I sat lost in thought.
Does Hazel work for him too? Did she already know Jacob?
She looked awkwardly at me when I didn't realize I kept staring at her face still lost in thought.
"What are you thinking so hard about?" Hazel asked playfully trying to play it cool.
"Oh nothing much." I tried to shrug it off but I couldn't curb my curiosity.
"Btw, how do you know about Jacob?" I asked her in a low voice thinking it wouldn't hurt even if she didn't hear me.
"You, of course! Dummy." Hazel looked at me confusedly but also a little flustered.
She's hiding something. Do I press her further or do I leave it alone?
"You're lying." I chose to push forward.
"Ahaha, what are you talking about?" Hazel laughed nervously but I kept staring at her until she gave in.
"Geez! You stubborn little vixen. I feel a little remorse for Kai and so I'm telling you, it was him who told me." Hazel rubbed the bridge of her nose as she frowned. When she saw my face growing pale she misunderstood me not believing her.
"I'm telling you the truth, I was just talking with him about you and then I just asked him out of curiosity who your boyfriend was and he told me it was Jacob in exchange for a little gossip he wanted to confirm."
Kai?
That name only brings fear and discomfort to my heart lately.
But I also feel somewhat guilty for his death.
If only he hadn't ever gotten involved with me. He wouldn't have felt hurt either.
Wait did Jacob kill him too?
* SIGH *
So maybe she isn't involved with Jacob. That doesn't mean I trust her completely but it could be a good thing to have someone around who's just a normal employee.
"I see." I smiled at her and decided to go back to work.
"What? Is that all?" Hazel nervously asked.
"Yeah, I was just curious because I thought I never mentioned who my boyfriend was the other day and you somehow knew." I smiled at her hesitantly.
"Geez, he might be a big shot but not big enough to keep it a secret like that now is he? Plus a few love scandals won't hurt him."
